Default Sims versus CT Sorties

Did you see where the Secretary of the AF is saying that in order to save money we need to cut back on continuation training hours...by about 20%! Says with the advancement in sims that we don't need all those CT sorties. It was in AF Times, I think the 11 Sep issue.

That has already been the case in the commercial world for decades. The informal policy in the C-5 world is that only copilots require A/C sorties. Everyone else can accomplish currency and checkrides in the sim.

C-17 instrument qual and emergency procedures checkrides are all in the sims, no 3-engine or abnormal configuration flying is done in the aircraft.

Our initial qual students get a 4 month course consisting of academics, 38 sims and 3 flights (2 + check)

Yes, I know. But I think there is a huge difference between a heavy pilot and a fighter guy getting CT in a sim. I've flown my share of E-3 sims and even though it's a heavy there is still a significant difference between the sim and the jet. Fortunately there is no U-2 simulator!

I could certainly fill all my instrument RAP squares in the sim with no problem. If sims could be linked up, I even think it's possible to fill some of the ACT squares in the sim.

BFM, ACM, BSA, SAT, Low Levels, etc...I'm finding it a little tough to see what the sim could possibly offer in terms of actual currency.

Razor,
I did not mean to suggest that the sim can solve all the currency beans in the ACC world. I was talking that in the heavy world, pilot proficiency stuff can be accomplished in the sim easily.
I believe the C-5 accident at Dover has some roots in negative transfer of "training technique" in the aircraft (leaving a throttle at idle to simulate Engine Out) versus applying real procedure in the Sim.
By accomplishing the mundane items in the sim, that would leave more A/C sorties available to accomplish Low Levels, and tactical arrivals/departures. This frees up airplanes to accomplish the mission. Moving rubber dog doo and all.

Agreed T-tail, sims definitely have their place. No doubt about that. I think we get in trouble when we try to use them for too much however.
