But today we have this accordiing to Lehman(who is one of the good guys): "When the Department of Defense was created in 1947, the headquarters staff was limited to 50 billets. Today, 750,000 full time equivalents are on the headquarters staff."

Massive topheaviness in C3 and other functions and always fewer teeth for the tiger.

I doubt we will have another world war on a conventional basis, but instead a continuous collection of wars on small scale and without end.

As a civilian trying to get picked up to fly military, reading these threads just bums me out.

AZ:

Don't worry, the military is still a great place to fly. It is not as good as it once was, but it is still great. Like any institution with a bureaucracy and group-think, many ill-advised things happen.

That being said, it is still a better place for me than going back (right now) to the airline biz.

What pains me is seeing how we came out of the morass of Vietnam to re-invent and reinvigorate the miltary for Desert Storm, only to see it wither away again through political tragedy.

I'm not sure the renewal can be done again, at least, to the same extent. But as 727C47 opined, there are Lts and Capts (and a lot of enlisteds in all the services) out there who still think like warriors.

I agree. Military and Airline aviation have undergone a number of cycles, from good to rotten and back again. It's probably better to get in when things are lousy and catch the rising tide than to do the reverse. Granted, this particular dip could be a long one, but all previous predictions of permanent career doom have eventually proven false.

the enlisted are a given, the Marine Corps could make do w/o a large percentage of its officer corps, but the NCOs,and Staff NCOs are priceless, and i'm speaking as a former grunt officer.
