I know of an AF pilot who caused the deaths of 3 paratroopers on an airdrop mission and He's climbed up the ladder quite well. He laid low for quite some time, didn't fly, but later got into a unit that flew as a ground officer. Someone saw his wings on his fatigues and offered him a slot, and over time worked his way up to a Wing CC

If there's one thing that Fogleman had right, it was that AF OPRs DO NOT accurately reflect actual performance. He picked the wrong incident to pursue that with, but the idea was correct. Anyone who's tried to write (notice I said "tried" because few stay that way) a referral OPR for other than DUI or failed fitness test (i.e. pure poor performance) will attest to that.

I will bet that the Wing CC above's OPR had no mention of said incident.

It makes more sense to ask why this guy was allowed to stay in the service in any capacity, and why he made O-4. But even that might not be unreasonable...he screwed up big-time, paid a price, and transferred to the staff corps where he doesn't get to touch the hardware. I would have been inclined to at least give the guy a chance as a JO in the reserves.

But the senate can still CANX his promotion, and somebody like McCain might just arrange that...
The same McCain who got his jet because his dad was a rising star Admiral, and who ran a jet out of gas flying over the conus and ejected?

He probably thinks the guy got a bum deal.

He also put a T-28 into a flat spin during a base to final turn and spun into Corpus Christi Bay.

He certainly knows how to survive crashes.

Rickair I don't say this to poke back at you, but the idea that our nation is honoring a congresswoman by naming a war ship after her is a slap in the face to heros like Kraig and those who have gone before and after him. IMHO it is ludicrous!
Total thread drift, but...

Fully agree with you. But the politicians think they're God's gift to mankind and treat themselves as such. IMO there should be more buildings and airports named for scientists and doctors.

Robert Byrd had so many things named after him his ego allowed him to let his wife have a few:
