Default The New American Militarism.

Came across this on flyingsquadron and just followed the google links and it's an interesting review .
http://www.lrb.co.uk/v27/n20/anatol-lieven/we-do-not-deserve-these-people

Btw has anyone had problems during the reg.process on flyingsquadron ?
No problem with the first part of the reg. but I don't get the second part of the process and I receive no answer to the e-mail I sent.

" a general as undistinguished as Wesley Clark "

The only truth in the whole article...

IMHO, the essay was relevant when it was written, eight years ago. Now, not so much.

IMHO, it's more then relevant, it hits pretty close to home.

This was my favorite line:

"The Republican and Democratic Parties may not be identical, but they produce nearly identical results."

Billy Pilgrim....ding ding ding ding ding....we have a winner, chicken dinner! This is what mosts folks could look closely at and realize. The government is like WWF. Out front they "fight". In the back, they slap high fives and go eat dinner afterwards talking about all the dumb fans.

I thought it sucked. The tone was patronizing, and some of the conclusions childish.

The most important contradiction, however, is between the near worship of the military in much of American culture and the equally widespread unwillingness of most Americans – elites and masses alike – to serve in the armed forces.
Despite our decent household income, all three of my adult children elected to serve. Nothing hacks me worse than the notion that "only the poor or the stupid join the military, as it's apparently all they can do."
