There is also a difference between applying for AD UPT off the street or doing it while already on AD in the Air Force. It was over 10 yrs ago that I did it, but know that the process while on Active Duty is extremely competitive. We had only 25 slots open to AD officers. At the time they were phasing out Navs in the KC-135, AWACS and beginning C-130J conversions... they limited the number of slots they would give to Navs to 10 out of the 25 and we had over 400 Navs apply for my board alone (and they weren't even allowing F-15E WSOs apply). Unless things have dramatically changed if you are going this route you pretty much need to have a #1 Recommendation from your Wing CC as well as your private pilot's license. They will use your AFOQT score as well as private flying hours logged to come up with your Pilot Candidate Selection Method (PCSM) score. More private flying = higher PCSM score. I know there are a few practice test books out there for the AFOQT. I don't really know what sawdust and chicken bones method they use to come up with that PCSM score, but can tell you that with a range of 1-99 the stats for my board for those selected was a 99 average for the 10 selected Navs and a 94 average for the other 15 non-rated Officers selected for UPT. You used to be able to take the AFOQT as many times as you wanted to get the highest score... not sure if this is still the case. Possibly some outdated info, so if anyone has anything that has changed in the past few years feel free to chime in; I hope this helps... good luck!
