Using Our Mobility to get the Best Car Price
I am looking at getting a new (brand X) car. Are there any online resources that would help me find the least expensive dealer in the USA for a particular make and model? I don't mind driving 2 or 3 days to get back home if it saves me enough.
I realize that taxes associated with a new car vary from state to state
and I also realize that I will pay my state's registration/tax no matter where I buy. Nevertheless, any thoughts?
If it matters, I live in KY and am looking at a VW.

done the buy "x" wherever, fly up, get it, drive home a few times. It's fairly painless and it lets you pick exactly what you want.
I have always done my homework, so I call we talk a bit, make an offer, ho hum back and forth, settle on price, throw a few grand deposit on card, sign some paperwork and fax back that's it. Next day go hop a flight and check it out. I always have a right of refusal.

Just tell one dealer that 10 other dealers have the same exact model of car you want. Who ever offers the best price will get the sale. Play the dealers against each other and use their offers as leverage against each other to beat other offers. All the dealers start at the same price point and have similar mark ups. You probably don't need to drive far to get the best deal, just get the price you want before you set foot on the dealers lot.

From my limited experience:
The trick is getting a "no haggle" dealer price or a picture of an offer sheet from the dealer you're negotiating with and then shotgunning it out to a half dozen dealers asking if they can beat the price. Every round with the new lowest price, resend again and keep asking. You'll know you're in the ballpark when dealers finally start coming back with "I can't beat that price but if you come in to my shop I'll match it."
Some dealers will play the game, some won't and it takes some effort on your part.
The dealers that will play to get your business are the ones that pride themselves on getting the monthly/quarterly/annually manufacturers sales bonus who will undercut their immediate sales price, knowing they're going to get a big check on the backend.

He really needs an editor, as his product is incredibly too wordy... but the info is great. And his method for buying a car cannot be beat, in my opinion. I've bought 3 cars using his info.

USAA uses TruCar which is only a link from the USAA site to the TruCar site. There's no other affiliation.
I sent out feelers using USAA/TruCar last month and all offers were MSRP to MSRP plus a few grand. USAA offers it as a car buying service, not a discount car buying service so go figure.

I did this for my wife's new car last year simply went to auto trader.com and put in what I was looking for and sorted via price low to high. I then called a dealer who had the best prices in the trim level we wanted. I called their internet sales had them send me a quote. I then went past my local dealer one last time and stated they will sell me this but I'll buy from you if you meet it and they did; so I ended up buying local.
