Flying Under the HUD
Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at 5:36pm

This photo was taken through the Heads Up Display (HUD) that Southwest Pilots use to find the airport in weather. It repeats all the necessary flight instrument data that the main instruments on the dash depict, all in one easy to find location. The nifty thing about the HUD is it allows SWA Captains to remain focused out in the distance looking for the runway at Minimum Descent Altitude (MDA) on the approach. That is the final time the Pilot can continue the approach. If the runway is not in sight by then, the pilot must execute the “go around? procedure.

The airspeed information is to the left (not in view in this photo), altitude to the right, radar altitude below and to the right of the “DH 150″ notation (this denotes that the “decision height? is 150 feet–the point at which the decision to land or go around must be made) and most importantly, the Flight Path Vector symbol on or near the runway. That is a pretty accurate instantaneous estimate by the HUD computer where the aircraft is flying to, in this case, just to the right of the runway aside the touchdown point. The Flight Path Vector Symbol also shows the airspeed relative to the speed selected by the Pilots for the approach, as well as whether the aircraft is accelerating (gaining energy) or slowing down (losing energy) relative to that selected speed. This is great information to have because it is often your first indication of an upcoming loss of airspeed, as in a windshear event.

The HUD. Another great tool we use to get our passengers where they need to be, safely and securely. (My partner was flying this approach and I was monitoring through the HUD for this picture.) Note the nifty runway identification lights illuminating where the runway starts.

Really?! You have to go the military section of this forum and look for the thread " a military poser in ALPA magazine"

And if you have a good amount of time, read the original posting over on Base Ops (?) I think it is where the guys actually dug up his info. It has the well deserved title "epic thread".

I would say how odd that would be...going from Eagle (ALPA) to CommutAir (now ALPA) to FedEx (ALPA) after making ALPA look so bad...but it is ALPA...for enough dues they'd let you slander them on the Capitol lawn.

Nobody would miss him here that I know of.

Hey I didn't say I loved the guy, I don't like what he did. I think texting your friends about him while he is sitting next to you in the crewroom is despicable.

I agree. He made a few mistakes and he's readily admitted that many times. Let the guy turn his life around. What happened, happened. Let's move on.

And yes, all Colgan guys should hold you down and beat you with bars of soap like they did "Pvt Pile" in Full Metal Jacket for bashing colgan a month before you joined them.

I feel like the elephant in the room regarding talk about Tim Martins is that you have to know he reads all of this. I'm inclined to agree with the idea that while what he did was inexcusable, it's over now and at some point attempting to railroad the guy's career becomes obsessive. He'll carry it with him forever, as he should, but what's done is done. That being said, he's already established a propensity to both read and post on the internet. For all you know he not only reads this forum but regularly posts as well.

My main preponderance regarding his situation is regarding the facebook notes he made posing as a SWA FO. I don't know about you all, but my facebook is full of people who not only know me, but have known me my whole life, in addition to a large percentage of pilots I either went to college with or worked with at some point. Was his friend list just full of total strangers? Because you have to think that if he had friended even a single person he worked with at Eagle they would have been witness to said notes and been in a position to completely call him out. I know at least about 50 people who would be ready and willing to call bull**** if I decided to start posting about my life as a Southwest FO.

So does this guy meet the criteria of being of good moral character?
