Ewr has a a gdp every single day, and when a bird sneezes you will see ground stops, pull down cancellations from SOCC, usually around noon until 9pm. If you get ewr, you will lose a lot of qol as a commuter, sacrificing full days off on both sides of reserve blocks and trips trying to get to work. Trust me, been there done that, not a fan. That said, ewr does have a lot of daily flights from CLT...then again, so does iad.

Why are you going to commute? If you're concerned about QOL, as you say, move to the largest, most junior hub airport and setup camp there. If you then want to commute, figure a driving commute to the base. You'll never miss your car home.
