ASA to CommutAir?
#21
Ok, hear me out, this is not flame bait, these thoughts have been swirling for a while...
Backstory:
-7 year FO at ASA
-Latest position notice shows basically no new upgrades through 5/2014
-I'm commuting to my base
-0 TPIC with no hope of it through the first half of 2014
-4700TT
-CommutAir has a base at my home airport
-Upgrade I hear is about 1.5 years?
-Yes I know the pay sucks (especially compared to ASA 8-yr FO pay on the 700/900), but I wouldn't be commuting
-ASA will be losing more airplanes next year
-Insert other management threats if the TA doesn't pass (I voted no)

Your worried about up upgrade for 5/2014? You will barely be on property there out of training and back to reserve. Ya home based but I bet your 7 yr schedule isn't so bad either plus the extra money. I'd stay if I were you I think you forget how much tons of legs per day and reserve and the low QOL of regionals. But do it if you think it's best for you I wouldn't mind moving up a number

I would not make that much of a horizontal move. It's just my opinion but you have way too many years invested at ASA. First year pay to first year pay for no commute? Definitely. But you have decent pay and I'm assuming a pretty good schedule. Any speculation as to the future of ASA and upgrades or lack thereof is the same speculation on upgrade time at commutair.

My humble opinion is that we will see enough people leaving in the next 3 months that you will see a position notice before summer which will allow you to upgrade. Don't go. If you do go, thanks, 'cause I move up one.

Well, chasing some TPIC (upgrade) which I know is wrong, but I'm guaranteed not to upgrade before 5/2014. But if what flyguy94 said is true, there isn't an upgrade to be had.
to answer the other question, a bunch of ASA guys/girls have recently been turned down at DAL. Seems to be an ASA stank. UAL is hiring our pilots, but it's mostly FOs that are leaving and some captains. Latest numbers for the ASA side had almost double the FOs leaving than captains and since I'm a fairly senior FO, most of those leaving are under me. FOs are short staffed like CommutAir so they're not upgrading.
Also, ASA has no flow to anywhere, no preferential interviews, etc... USAir and AA are only hiring military, friends, family, and ultra qualified pilots (1000+TPIC) It'll be a few years before AA, USAir, or DAL get around to calling me, if ever. UAL, VX, Spirit, and JB are a crap shoot but not likely.

I know at least 2 ASA pilots and 2 XJT pilots that have been hired at DAL

LAX is junior but not overwhelmingly so. Any base is possible within a few months, as vacancy notices are coming out every 10 days. We have 500 pilots and 315 of them *should* flow to Delta in the next 2.5 years. Add to that other major airline hiring.
Upgrade and new hire classes running every week through the summer. Then another round of the same in January-July 2015. Then another round in January-July 2016. Upgrade is right at 3.5 years right now, should be down to 3 by the summer. After the next round of flows(July 2015) it should be 2 years or perhaps a little less.
Not telling you to pull the trigger, just want you to have all the facts.

Thank you for the civilized discussion. I'm staying put until at least March, then I'll reevaluate.
I know hiring is picking up but I seriously doubt I'll see an upgrade in 2014. I'm more likely to get a job elsewhere (above a regional) than see an upgrade at ASA. As it stands now, supposedly we lose another 9 CRJs next year.
