Default Over Qualified?

I'm currently looking for a position and have been doing both research and networking with other pilots I know.

I have seen a common thread at several company's that do both part 135 and 91 ops. They generally only hire low time guys and promote up to captain from there. I know several pilots that where qualified for left seat in mid size cabin jets and didn't get the job after interview. Some had around 5000tt, several types, sharp and current.

Is this just an anomaly? Common? Thanks for the input!

Might try adding a line in your cover letter stating that you are not, repeat NOT going to any airline. While there is nothing wrong with a career in the airlines, it just isn't what I want to do for a flying job.

Or something like that. Pretty much anyone with just a couple thousand hours will look good to most any airline right now.

Most 135 operators will only hire captains if they have time in type. You can have 10,000 hours of the best experience possible, and still get overlooked if you don't have the type.

Sounds legit. One company was going to pay for the type on day one though. It does sound like they where stressed about people leaving for other part 91 departments also.

Several have a training contract that would offset some of there losses when pilots leave.

Some 91/135 operators don't like airline folks because airline folks tend to understand things like "fatigue" and "stabilized approaches" and "minimums", which are all pesky things to some less reputable operations.

Yeah without time in type, or equivalent that can be transferred over (Phenom 100-300, CL-65 / Challenger 300) they won’t upgrade you or in some cases hire you. ARGUS/WYVRN run the show and it can be tough to qualify.
