I don't fully agree with that statement. There is no standard agreement, this is why dirtbag outfits make you sign a contract. For me I would be willing to sign a year contract for a full initial type, and I have at previous companies. My current company doesn't have a contract for anything, and that is how a good company operates. How would somebody ever be able to leave a job if they had to agree to stay every 6 months after recurrent? That makes no sense....

I wouldn't do it I did it 3 months ago and I've lost sleep about it ever since. I am leaving my company this month and just hoping they don't sue me for that money now. I'm going to claim duress as I signed because I'd loose my job if I didn't.. But still wish I would've told them to shove it..

If I were in their shoes, it sounds like leverage to keep you in place after the planes been sold but still in limbo. Nice way to keep the pilot to the end of the plane. I wouldn't do it.

I called their bluff and they folded at the last minute. I know everyone is replaceable but I'm needed for the time being. The cost of hiring someone else and taking an airplane offline far exceeds what they would gain by having me a sign a contract. I'm in training at the moment.

What irks me is apparently I'm the only one in our group who actually put up a fight. Everyone else was ready to sign.

Im dealing with this issue as we speak. I am headed to recurrent next week and my company just sent me a one year training contract that needs to be signed before I show up for training. I am planning on telling them that I think its extremely unusual for someone to sign a contract for recurrent training and that I wont do it, but plan on continuing to work for them with no plans on leaving. We will see how they respond.

Nicely done. However, I casually asked a lawyer friend about this and he said there is no way they could enforce it because you were already employed (signed under duress), but they could still be a huge PITA making an example out of you to discourage others.

When I was hired I did not sign any kind of training contract. I know this is fairly standard in the industry so I would have had no issue doing it.

I just got a phone call from my chief and he said that they are starting to enforce training contracts. He said I'll need to sign one before I leave for training. Mind you I have a plane ticket leaving in less than 36hrs for FSI and this is the first time time I've heard about this and haven't even had a chance to review the contract.

Two months after I got hired my chief told me not to move (was planning on moving closer to my base airport) because the plane is up for sale. It was almost sold but the owner hasn't accepted any offers yet. I think he is really pushing to sell now. I'm surprised I still have a job. I haven't interviewed anywhere else and even though I never signed a contract I planned on staying a year as a gentleman's agreement.

I fear every month I'm going to lose my job and now at the last second they spring this training contract on me. I called friends at 4 different operators and none of them were asked to sign a contract for recurrent. I'm not planning on leaving tomorrow but would like to keep my options open. I don't want to wait until my plane disappears and I'm on the street with no opportunities.

What do I do at this point? Need answers quick!
If they would backdate it to the original starting date, I wouldn't have an issue signing it.

But they probably want it to start now. In that case IMO go to recurrent without signing it.

edit: I'm late to the party:
