Default Survey Pilots Packing

Getting ready to leave for a few months and curious about what those with experience being gone for extended periods recommend packing and what type(s) of luggage you found to be best?

I found several smaller duffle bags packed around the camera rig and in front seat were better than larger bags or a roller board in the 172 I flew.

Also, I was able to separate my clothes for different climates in different bags.

I started out with a large suitcase and a smaller suitcase. On my first break home I realized what I needed and didn’t need so I consolidated to a large Adidas duffel bag

I would suggest packing a rolling duffle like this. It will be easy to carry in and out of FBOs and it fits nicely on the empty seat when going between sites as most places won’t allow anything that leans against the computer. The small bag can fit in the tail or behind the passenger seat if it’s at least halfway forward which keeps it clear of the computer

Personally, I have one large suitcase for my clothes and either a backpack or a carryon for my flight gear. Remember, you will be on the road for a long period of time. I usually pack about a weeks worth of clothes and wash them up before we relocate. I use trash bags for my dirty clothes so they can be separated and stored in the aircraft easily if I don't have time to wash them before we have to relocate. I have one set of long sleeve shirts, one set of short sleeve shirts, a hoodie, and jeans. It works out pretty well for me. Also, you will be using the airlines to get to your aircraft so baggage fees will apply when you go to your aircraft. I always have to pay for the overweight baggage but I'm living out of a hotel for long periods of time. Tide pods or something similar is what I use for laundry because it saves space and weight. Plus, you don't have to worry about it spilling in your bag. Enjoy your time on the road, it does get old, but you should make the best of it. It's the most freedom you will have in this industry. The experience you will get is irreplaceable. One large suitcase and a backpack or a carryon is all you need.

Thanks to everyone for the help.
