Thumbs up Eating and Pilot Health

I'm a student pilot right now and I plan on going commerical later on in life. I'm looking for some information about some good nutrional snacks and drinks that I can start adapting too. I know my 2006 New Year's resolution is to stop drinking Coke. If their is any current or retired pilots out there, can you please give me some ideas? Thanks!

you dont have to give up your coke completely there are some alternatives. Im a pepsi guy and it took about 2 12 packs of diet pepsi and now I can't even drink the regular without feeling sick almost. There are also the pepsi one and coke zero that have no sugar. I haven't had the coke zero but I have heard that it taste exactly like coke. Anyways thats my 2 cents.

Coke Zero rocks! I think it actually tastes better than regular coke.
But you're a student pilot, shouldn't you be drinking Sam's Cola with your ramen noodles?
Probably the best way to lose weight is to give up drinking, but since that ain't happenin' I try to avoid sugars and fatty meats. If you look around the airport, you'll see a lot of overweight airline pilots - this job is not conducive to healthy livin!

The first sip of Zero I had reminded me of Tab, but then it got ok. I've been drinking diet sodas now for years and the regulars taste like pure sugar, way too strong. 'Course all that saccharin and nutrasweet probably isn't any better for me.

Packing your own food when possible vs. buying the high fat crap at the terminal is a good first step for health. After I was displaced from the left seat I started to pack food to cover one or two meals per day. I would store this food in the fridge provided by the company. My intent in doing this was to save money but I got a nice unexpected reward. In about 8 months I lost 15-20 pounds. Of course the kind of flying that you do will determine if this is a feasible option for you.

Drink lots of Coffee. Its good for you. If you drink about 6 cups a day, you can cut your risk of diabetes by like 54%, for men.

At least six studies indicate that people who drink coffee on a regular basis are up to 80% less likely to develop Parkinson's, with three showing the more they drink, the lower the risk. Other research shows that compared to not drinking coffee, at least two cups daily can translate to a 25% reduced risk of colon cancer, an 80% drop in liver cirrhosis risk, and nearly half the risk of gallstones.
Plus it is loaded with antioxidants, more so than tea I believe.

Any chance of referencing that study? a link, a journal title, anything?

Nice find.

Six cups though? I'd be shaky and jittery all day. And it still stains the teeth
