Default Quitting Smoking???

Ok, I admit that smoking for 20 years was pretty stupid, However I finally decided to quit. I have been smoke free for 10 days now, I know (no big deal..right) it is a big achievment for me, But I woke up this am with what I thought was a bad cold, but now I think might be bronchitus. Is this type of thing normal as your body cleans out years of harmful chemicals. Anyone who has stopped smoking experianced this???? I have a DR appointment for the AM, just curious I guess...

Dude, 10 days is a HUGE deal. Studies have proven that after 3 days or so, the nicotine has completely left your system and the addiction goes from predominantly physical, to mostly, if not all psychological.

I have nothing useful to add to your question, except for a MUCH deserved congrats to you! I am trying to quit again after stupidly going back to it (after 8 years of not smoking!) and cannot get passed the dreaded 3 day mark. Okay, I'm not really trying per say, but I've been seriously planning on quitting. Okay, okay fine, I've been thinking about what it would be like to quit again.

TPROP:

Yes, it is a huge deal. First, let me congratulate you and say that I'm sure that you probably feel a whole lot better since you quit. I smoked from 1977 to 2001. People quit for all kinds of reasons. In situations such as this, try to concentrate on what you're heading towards as oppose to what you're going through. Do that and you'll always "walk on water".

All the best. I wish you good health.

Thanks for the well wishes guys. Actually Im kinda suprised that it has been as easy as it has, I guess mabye because mentally I was ready for the first time in my life, but I have been concerned with teh frequency of waking up with coughing, which I didnt have when I smoked, I have heard many say that it is normal after quitting as your body cleans itself out...I guess time will tell...

I sure you are aware of twelve step programs out there. The third step states - "Made a decision to turn..."

As far as the coughing, you're right. Your body is cleansing itself of the toxins that you injested while smoking.

TPROP, as you and atp eluded, a cleansing of sorts. The persistant cough happened to me as well, and by the way, WELL DONE YOU !

For those thinking of going down this path, I used the gum, although I'm now addicted it instead. Figure I may need a couple of cigarettes a day to get off it.

Good luck to you.

2 weeks great I'm on 2 hrs. Are you cold turkey? I quit before and I'm sure you would agree the first three days are rough. My main problem is eating.

What's that? Eating period......or smoking a cigarette after eating? When I did smoke, having one after a good meal was second only to a smoke and coffee first thing in the morning.

Early morning coffee and a smoke? Oh man do I miss that. That and an ice cold beer. Ashamed to say that I have smoked for 10 years, just quit this year. I used Chantix. The stuff was the magic bullet for me. You keep smoking the first week you take the drug and quit on the 8th day. Took it for 60 days and it was surprisingly easy. Many health insurance plans will pay for it, it cost me about $60 total. I would strongly recommend it.
