Ear pain - unpressurized ga airplanes
A friend of mine just started flight school and is having ear pain every time he flys and it usually last a couple hours after he lands. What could be the cause of this and why does it happen every time he goes up, even at altitudes only reaching 5000 feet msl?
Would having tubes put in his ears help?
Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Valsalva on the way up. Valsalva on the way down. Trick is to do it before you feel the pressure building up in your ears/ sinuses (probably every couple hundred feet).
My credibility: Bad allergies, 800+ hours flying skydivers, 20+ nosebleeds on descent.

Would chewing gum help in addition to the Vasalva?

Instead of pinching my nose with my fingers, I'll put the palm of my hand up against my nose. Pinching isn't as comfortable with a bunch of mucus up there. Another trick is not to push too hard, just a nice constant pressure and hold it for a bit until you feel your Eustachian tube open up.. AHHHHHHHHHHHH it's so relieving!
I also kept a ton of paper towels in the plane. A jumper got on one time and asked, "Is that blood on the window!???" I wasn't paid enough to clean it off
