Default Medical extension

I had someone tell me they had gotten a 1st Class medical, but the AME put a restriction that it could not be used for 2nd/3rd class privileges after the 1st privileges went away after 6 months.

I've never heard of this. it doesn't pass the sniff test, and I want to see if any of you have heard of this.

i agree unusual ... but some of the new HIMS SI's especially 1st class can be individualized in the first few years. Upon FAA direction only time limits can be placed on any med certificate by the AME. There are other rare medical issues that same can happen

It is standard wording on a special issuance medical.

not on the certificate per se, but the letter authorizing the issuance is usually 2 to 3 pages

"Not valid for any class after xx/xx/xx" is on the actual medical certificate.

It doesn't say "special issuance" on the medical, but the wording I described above gives it away.

SI Authorization Letter Interpretation - AOPA
there are many instances time limiting is used and not nec for a SI. example patient on a bp med and need closer observation for the first 6 to 12 months or especially airmen coming back from cancer treatment!
