Thyroid Cancer
I was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had both thyroids taken out. Now they are recommending radio active iodine and to take thyroid replacement hormones for life. During the surgery they also found spread of the cancer to local lymph nodes close to thyroid.
Can anyone please tell me about the turn around time to get my first class medical back from the FAA? Would i get my medical back if the levels are at 0.1. My treating physician says that my levels would never be normal since they are trying to keep the thyroid hormones down to prevent recurrence. Thus i would never be "euthyroid". What thyroid levels will the FAA be looking before issuing the certificate? Any info is much appreciated. Thanks.

you can most likely fly again ... don't get bogged down in the medical weeds. Attend to your cancer. When your doctor say initial Rx is complete and are ready to fly ... go the AME. His final dec will be defered to FAA. Hopefully 1 back and forth communication between you and FAA ... you get SI for 1 year with further instructions.

I was diagnosed earlier this year with Thyroid cancer, along with 2 other pilots in the Seattle area. One just finished his treatment this week and think and the other got his 1st Class medical back last month about a week after finishing treatment. So it does not seem like the FAA is taking very long to issue an SI for Thyroid cancer. I will find out in a few weeks when my treatment is finished.
They did tell me that I would likely get a 6 month SI for a year, then a yearly SI for 5 years total. Seems to be the standard.

I was diagnosed and treated for thyroid cancer early on this year. Got the surgery and RAI treatment and finally got the okay from treating physician for return to work. I was wondering if anyone knew how to proceed with renewing class 1 medical again. I see they have a CACI for hypothyroidism which technically applies to me with no thyroid but not really sure how FAA deals with it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
