New Contract?

It would benefit ALPA and the pilot group tremendously if ALPA funded CBA learning/study classes were offered. A representative from ALPA could teach a 1-2 hour class at or around the airport. Time slots could be published and RSVP'd and any one pilot could attend but the focus would be on new hires that recently finished IOE. I'm sure you have some excuse why that is not possible but I know ALPA volunteers that would love to do stuff like this, but the upper MEC folks(probably) don't want to fund it.
Actually what I think would be more valuable is online training created at the national level that talks about the relationship between the company, the union, and the rank and file, as well as some of the specifics about bargaining and representation under the RLA, and why National itself doesn't support amending that legislation (well, at least they didn't the last time I was in a conference at Herndon they didn't...).
At this exact moment there's a lot of potential changes in store for certain sections of the contract so I don't think now is the right moment to tackle that project at an MEC level.

The union doesn't (and shouldn't) spend a lot of time talking about the contract in Indoc because your first goal should be getting through Systems, IPT, your Oral, Sims, your Checkride, Differences, then finally IOE. Ditto the silly company presentation on scheduling, Flica, etc. The only reason both of those topics are covered when they are is that's the last time they can get an entire new hire class in one room.
To go with what TallFlyer said, you won't have a clue what they're talking about. Keep those handouts because no one is going to tell you what you're supposed to do "next" once you head to the sims, but it is all in those handouts. Hopefully they've updated the one on reserve duty to reflect the latest LOA.

You say the CP's think we are childish, well I can tell you a couple of member's of our MEC come off as immature and unprofessional in appearance as well. To give an example TR came into our indoc class about a year ago while a volunteer of the union was trying to give a presentation about the union. TR was unshaven, sunglasses on top of his head in jeans and wearing a university of Tennessee sweatshirt yapping on his cell phone with his feet proped on a chair. It got so annoying that one of the pilots told him to take his call outside of the class. We have an FO rep I bumped into on the road in uniform shirt half untucked, probably hadn't seen an iron the whole trip and about 3 days of beard stubble. It was really hard to take the guy seriously when the capt I was with and myself were having a conversation with him about upcoming negotiations.
