This is the truth. Non revs may be asked to get off. It only makes sense if a paying passenger shows up who holds a ticket for that flight. Make sure you and your guests know this. Otherwise YOUR pass privileges could be in jeopardy...

Not sure how your airline works, but I wouldn't think they'd take off a comparable level non-rev if you weren't there when the seats got assigned. With non-revs if you don't respond when they call your name they just go to the next one on the list.

They will not bump a boarded nonrev for late-show nonrev unless it's positive space must-ride business travel.

If they’ve already loaded the lower D2 onto the plane? Not likely. You’ll likely have a “no show” annotated next to your name.

If you show up to the gate before the other D2 is on the plane? Maybe, but don’t count on it.

Depends. If it’s 20-30 prior to dep then sure, they should switch you with the guy that’s boarded. Though depends if they’ve already loaded a valet bag and have to go fishing for it.

I’ve seen the above happen a handful of times on flights I’ve been working.

10 prior then no way.

I knew a guy that - the plane had pushed...and, they brought it back and pulled him for a paying pax.

So, yeah, it happens.
Nothing you can do, but be polite.

I've non-rev'd recently and in one instance a paying passenger showed up after the doors were closed and we were still at the gate but they did not pull anyone off because the doors were closed (the husband was on the phone with her and was not happy). Then on the return flight, 3 people didn't show up for an oversold flight and as the gate agent was taking us down the plane told the other guy to close the doors just in case the people showed up.

I imagine it all depends on the status and type of ticket the revenue passenger is on. If it is a basic economy with no status, they probably won't bother removing a non-rev after door closure. If it is a exec plat, they have more incentive to get them on at the expensive of a short delay and kick off non-rev.

But that's just my educated guess.

Your educated guess is good.

I have seen nonrev friendly gate agents wait until the exact second where they are supposed to close, clear nonrevs, hustle them down the jetway and slam the door... with runners coming down the concourse.

Have also seen them keep making announcements and delay the close while trying to accommodate late pax.

But in the case of late premium pax, especially ultra-premium, I have seen planes return to the gate after push to board them. The airlines know where their bread is buttered and lower-level employees risk serious discipline if the anger those pax. On the flip side, they will likely not get second-guessed if they bend over backwards to accommodate premium pax.
