Question Nonrev bumped off of flight after boarded

I haven't heard of this happening before but it happened to my mother today when she tried to nonrev home.

The gate agent gave her a ticket and she was physically in the seat on the plane. The flight had been delayed, it was already after push time.

She sees the gate agent come down the aisle and asks the woman behind he if she is a nonrev. The woman didn't know what that was. My Mom told her "I'm a nonrev." The gate agent informed her she had to get off the plane, a revenue passenger showed up and needed the seat.

She got off without hesitation as she knows she is representing me when she travels nonrev.

All I could say was "Sorry that happened, I didn't realize you could lose your seat once you got on"

I fully understand that when we nonrev we are prioritized below all revenue pax, but it seemed a little odd for her to be removed from the flight after it was already boarded.

Does anyone know the actual ruling on this? I always assumed that once they print you a ticket you're good to go.

Call your union rep and tell them about it.

I really don't want to make a big deal about it I'm curious more than anything. I'm sure it wouldn't be worth my time anyway.

It's a terrible time to be trying to nonrev anywhere with all the spring break pax.

Not unusual at all. Its happened to me a couple times. A revenue runner shows up while the door is still open and you, as a non-rev, are outta there.

What is he going to complain about? That the people who pay our salary were accommodated over someone hitching a ride. Non-revs aren’t safe until you’re off the gate.

Thanks for clarifying, I didn't realize that!

No. As a nonrev you are always subject to being bumped by higher priority pax. Smile and be polite, otherwise you'll lose your pass privileges for a year (typical punishment). Airlines have ZERO tolerance for nonrev-induced operational hassles.

"Usually" if they shut the door, you are good. But I have been ordered to return to gate after push to replace nonrevs with late-connecting premium pax.

Here's a hypothetical: You're a D2 and checked in online for a flight before another D2. The other D2 is given the last seat because you are running late and haven't checked in at the gate yet. You finally show before door closes. Will that D2 be removed from the airplane for you since you checked in online before them? (Also lets just say it's a 145 that needs an alternate and they can't take a jumpseater )
