PSA Questions
 
Looking to get back into the airline sector. What are the junior and senior bases? Training? Schedules? Etc etc?

senior: DAY, CLT, DCA, PHL I believe in that exact order. Dayton went senior due to CVG closing.

training: Indoc in Dayton 3-4 weeks, then sims either in cvg or Clt 2 weeks. maybe stl, atl… depends on sim availability but I thjnk they’re keeping most new hires in Clt or cvg. You’ll probably wait 6 to 8 weeks from ground school to the Sims because they’re so backed up.

schedules? Reserve sucks. 11 days off but if you’re smart you can get 12. It’s a bucket system. Let’s say you have 4 days of reserve and there’s a trip available. It gets pushed to your phone, you have 15 mins to say yes or no. If you don’t reply it’s an automatic no. Of the people who say yes, most senior gets it. If everyone says no, most Junior gets the assignment. 4-6 days of reserve will probably land you doing airport ready reserve. You sit at the airport for 8 hours incase they need you. It’s awful.

if you’re senior on reserve though it’s great cause less chance they’ll call you. I went 3 months without getting a reserve assignment. Just picked up the occasional open time trip to stay current with landings.

once you’re off reserve it’s as if it’s a completely different airline. i’ve had 19 days off and credited 72 hours, without touching my vacation. That was a fun sporadic trip to Italy. I’ve also worked my butt off and had 11 days off well crediting 115-120 hours. So you can work as much or as little as you want currently as long as you don’t violate the contract or 117.

that will change once PBS is negotiated but there’s no timeline, no guarantee it’ll pass a vote, and no one knows any details. It’s been coming though for the last 3-4 years. Then again TYS was closing for 15+ years and then it suddenly
did so who knows.

as for now we have 2 rounds of line bidding. Round 1 allows for a 24hr schedule adjustment period to completely rebuild your schedule as you like. It’s amazing because it works independently from our reserve grid. The lowest rd1 has the opportunity to have a schedule better then the #1 rd 1. It’s the great equalizer. Once you’re rd1 it’s as if you hit the lottery…

For example my original award is 11 days off, 77hrs credit working every weekend. When I was done adjusting it (SAP) I had 14 off and 91 hours with the weekends off I needed. I’ve never missed a bday, thanksgiving, xmas, nye, 4th of July, Halloween, anniversary… you get the idea. Round 2 is made of the leftovers and reserve. 11-13 days off with 91-75hrs credit depending on the month for non reserve rd2. We then have seniority based trading and then first come first served. Lots of opportunities to change things as long as we have enough reserves to cover what changes you want.

Flow is useless to a new hire except for upward movement. I think at current numbers it’s 10-12 years? Doubt regionals will exist in 2-3 with how it’s going. We’re still losing 40-60 pilots a month though so new hires should move up pretty quick.

i’ll put it this way, when Covid struck and I thought I might be stuck here another 4 to 5 years I wasn’t mad at where I’d have to spend that time. it’s the easiest job I’ve ever had, 95% of the time. The other 5% will leave you questioning your life choices up until that moment.

I’d say I’m also happier than my buddies at Piedmont, envoy, and republic.

Hey I’m a new hire PSA class date is Jan 3. Was wondering if I’m sitting waiting for a sim are we getting paid for that? I dread going back to instructing in that limbo time frame.

Yes you get paid the guarantee the entire time. My advice is spend that time reading and learning the contract. It will be your best friend to try to avoid getting screwed over on reserve by crew scheduling after IOE. Even though you'll never fully avoid it at least you'll know what to expect.

The contract is swiss cheese and has so many loa’s it’s fruitless to read. And the mechanism for refusing a contract violation is fruitless anyway.

lcr is contractually 1 in 7 ( or maybe 1 to 7)

Day Trips vs 4 Day Trips
 
I see lots of posts about 4-day trips. Does PSA have 1-day trips? What about 2-3 day trips? If yes, how senior do you have to be to get these trips in DCA?
