Probably because the Asia gigs suck and aren't worth it. They may look good on paper, but talk to some guys that actually do it.

A buddy of mine just washed out at PSA on LOFT. He had....no....previous check-ride failures. None. During training he had failed no writtens and only had to repeat one sim lesson. Imagine that. They just spent the money to give this guy a type and then washed him out.

Be careful at any training program. It would seem that PSA, and certainly many other airlines, will wash you out just so they can wash their hands of having to explain anything to anyone who could possibly inquire after an incident or accident. That or it's some twisted loyalty to a dysfunctional hierarchy of calculated collateral damage.

To me, it appears as if the regionals are handling pilots with perfect, or near perfect training records, as if they could all be future Captain Renslows. There is no credence given to prior training records in their considerations of whether they wash you out or not. Callus and completely illogical. They're destroying pilots futures and not even thinking twice about it.

 

As they say, past performance does not guarantee the future. Their records only got them into training--you have to meet the standards in training.

Heard about this as well from a sim instructor. Apparently he could handle emergency procedures fine for the PC, but when it came to normal flight line procedures, just couldn't stay in the game. They gave him an additional LOFT and still no dice? If he can't handle the LOFT, from a training department perspective, wouldn't he run into issues in OE which is a whole different ballgame than the sim? And he already had to do redo a previous lesson? Not to knock on him but is that not a little bit of a red flag if you are having to repeat lessons/ not progressing on schedule?

On a side note, did they issue him a type? I was under the assumption that types were going to start being issued strictly on recurrent PC's until late July for new hires at the earliest.

Repeating a sim lesson is a big no no. Anyone I knew in my big class in early 08' who had extra sim session all washed out. Given a second loft and not passing equals two failures plus extra sim which is another failure in their book.

Doesn't matter if you had perfect record in the past.

PSA flight department are full of good guys, and no I'm not associated with them, just know the guys there won't wash you out without solid reasons such as the above post stated.

 

By "him" I am assuming that he is you? Take responsibility man. This isn't a video game that you restart if you kill people...

.........Agreed. I think however, the standards of training have drastically changed in the light of Colgan 3407. The guy had a perfect record. You'd think a company, in doing what they did, was reacting to a pilot failing his way to the airlines like Renslow. The guy had an issue with one concept; LOFT, in an ocean of new concepts. Big deal. That's what a captain is there for, to mentor the small stuff into place. Polish. It just seems to me that newer, higher expectations are placing undue burdens upon new hires that have superb records. It's causing more collateral damage than necessary. The airlines want every trainee to be a Chuck Jager, but the last thing they want to do is pay for 'em. Just my opinion.

Gimme a break. No. Guys that have failed multiple checkrides, like Renslow "kill people". I think your commentary is a perfect example of over-reaction to a small hick-up in training. "Kill people". Pu-lease.

 

Oh. I donno. I assumed because he passed his initial PC that he got a type out of it.
