Default Dumb Question

Again I'm military and new to this process.

Can someone briefly explain what "flow through" is with regards to major airlines? Also, if I really want to get picked up by AA, would it be smart to accept an offer from PSA over another regional?

Any and all opinions are appreciated. Thanks

Flow through is simply that AA has agreed to fill a certain number of new hire class spots with pilots from their wholly owned regional airlines, no interviews required. At PSA that number is 6 per class currently, and those pilots are taken from the seniority list in seniority order.

Much has been written about the efficacy of said flows, but I think the bottom line is that it's a good thing to have in your back pocket for the long run. If you want to go to AA, people have been hired outside the flow, so it is possible to bypass that wait. It's also more likely to get hired at another Mainline carrier (DAL, UAL, FDX, UPS, etc) while you're waiting for your turn to flow.

Gotcha. Is getting hired by AA while at PSA solely based on time in company (seniority), or do they also consider the amount hours someone has.

Did you fly in the military? If so you will stand a chance of getting hired at AA outside the flow. You will have to go in and interview just like any other off the street hire but it certainly beats waiting 7 years to flow.

I am military. But I respect the fact that there is a seniority list based on pilots who have waited their time.

If you've got AC and IP boxes checked off in a turbine military aircraft there's a strong chance that your stay at the regionals won't be long. Starting logging some 121 time and keep your apps updates with your dream jobs and something will break loose.

Heck, start applying now and you might surprise yourself.

I wouldnt worry too much about this. You arent preventing someone else from flowing if youre hired off the street. Its no different than if you were hired from Expressjet to AA.

AC time but no IP. I don't mind doing the regional gig to get experience flying at civilian fields.

Apps are in, hoping for the best.

Just finished first week of AA indoc. Class of 32, breakdown as follows:

5 of us were PSA flow
5 PDT flow
15 Envoy flow
7 Military OTS hire. 5 were fast movers the other 2 tankers.

VP Flight ops came in and told us they have 15,000 applications on file not including flow right now. Three more classes for the year, 09/05 then two in November.
