Default Asking for LORs at regionals

So I'm just curious when it comes to asking for LORs at the regional level when applying for the majors, especially coming from an FO standpoint..I work for a big regional where it's rare to fly with the same person so it's difficult for them to really get to know you...also, it seems a lot of CA seem bitter that FOs are getting picked up, which makes it difficult to ask them directly for letters-especially when they are applying to the same job. I've asked one or two in the past and they said they "wouldn't write one because I need to get PIC before I'm taken serious-plus said they are applying to the same job."

So what's the correct etiquette or am I thinking too much into this? I find it very awkward. I wouldn't if I flew with the same people more, but that's not the case!

Honest question, please keep this discussion civil! Lol

That's pretty s....y if someone won't write one because they are trying to suppress their competition. If you're finding this is really a problem try asking check airmen and if you have any lifers at your airline ask them.

On a related note, what's the word on LOR's vs just having a lot of references? I know we're all trying to figure out the magical formula to get hired, but is the consensus that you should have one or two letters of recommendation backing everything else up?

And to the OP: there's always your Chief Pilot (if he doesn't know you, that just means you're doing your job), flight attendants, and former coworkers/supervisors.

I felt that way when i was at my regional. You will eventually start flying with the same people. Screw the guys that wont give u the time for a LOR. If u do a great job in recurrent you could always ask the cka to write one.

Thanks for the replies..yeah that's a good idea when it comes to CKAs or the chief. Not that I'm intimidated to ask, just find it very awkward when people hardly know me besides doing a flight or two with them, that's all.

Ask a check airman of you happen to fly with one. I always viewed writing recommendations as apart of the job.

When I was a newhire at my current shop, I was lucky to get a captain sim partner who was transitioning to the plane. He also happens to be a lifer here so he makes a great reference for me when it comes to writing a letter. Or any sim partner you might get to know well when you are in training or in recurrent.
