Skywest - ASA to Merge
Hot off the press.....
Calm down everyone, this is just rumor but a senior Skywest guy put it out to some of our ALPA people that a merger is in the works, just waiting on the ASA contract to finish. They want to get rid of the ASA name (for obvious reasons) let Delta do all the gate/ramp ops in ATL. Since delta recently made ASA fire all of their gate agents and rampers in ATL, this would make sense.
No word on date, fences, etc. Could be that neither airline can fill their new hire classes. Buckle up, this could get interesting.
Stick

This would entail though that perhaps SkyWests' move to adopt ALPA is making forward progress? On my way back from a trip, I was in uniform dead heading and another passenger showed me the USA Today article that said that ASA was 66% on-time and was at the bottom of the list. I didn't have anything to say =(

removing all the emotion from it.... I think a merger will probably improve the quality of the new hire flying DCI. I've heard even with quick upgrades, Skywest has a hard time filing there classes. ASA is having an extremely difficult time filling classes (which is typical with a pending contract fight).
Consolidation will happen, the only question is when.

Umhhhh, are you sure you meant to say that???? ASA is not adopting a new union. We have been, are, and will be ALPA. We are in the process of finalizing a contract. Why they are waiting is because they have to know what the cost are.

It's much more cost effective to transfer aircraft to SkyWest and have newhires at $19 an hour and year 3 captains at $63 or so than merge. The last thing management would want is a bunch of ****ed off union pilots with years and years of seniority and the additional cost that go along with that. It's much better to have a bunch of new guys with SJS that would do anything to fly a RJ.
