When it all turns around, it will be just like the past few years- a degree in marine mammal gender studies and a sex change will be all you need. Things like 1000+ TPIC and real experience mean nothing to the HR intern sorting through the stack.
(Sarcasm...) (Okay, maybe not all THAT much sarcasm) :D |

stop it. You’ve been counting down the days to your flow since you got to your regional. Don’t act like if your number came up tomorrow you’d have to think about whether you were going to bypass or not.

Honestly, degrees anymore are worth less than the paper they're printed on. I think I'm going to take Mike Rowe's advice and learn a trade from the adult vocational and technical school near my house. I'm thinking something along the lines of HVAC, electrician, or a plumber. No matter what economic state we're in, there will always be a need for those kind of trades.
If the music picks back up, then great, I'll keep flying. If not, then I'm going to ride it out until they furlough me, because as an employee of an AA WO, I sure as heck ain't taking this slap in the face ELOA that they're peddling. |

I was an A&P before I went airline. Many people told me I should have just stuck to flying and I would have been better off. This may be true but as I am now furloughed from a regional I am glad I got my A&P as I am working full time doing maintenance. Yes I would rather be flying, but I don’t have that option for awhile. At least I can pay the bills and afford kibbles for my dog. Trade school is a great choice and a great back up. Even better would be a degree that includes certificates in a trade. A few aviation universities provide a path to a 4 year, an A&P, and flight training.

I think that Mike Rowe is spot on. We put a huge emphasis on getting a degree in something, anything, yet most of the time there is no real return. The trade schools are great and we should be pushing them as an admirable path instead of some type of lower tier alternative for those who don’t go to college.
But if you want to be an airline pilot, and work in the upper tier... |
Am I the only one who thinks this crisis has a silver lining?
There is no talk about NBA stars, or famous people who are famous for the sake of famous. This country has been unconscious, sick on its own excess and foray into the meaningless. All of a sudden real people are in focus. Nurses, Doctors, Garbagemen, Truckers, Policemen etc. Real everyday people who make up our fabric! Lets not forget! I can only hope that this crisis will kill off the debilitating ID-political scene as well! |
