If this is true it might help some people but not most. It reminds me of a time when we had a mainline guy on our regional jumpseat. All he talked about was how they were hiring and why are we still at the regional. The captain turned to look at him and said I have applied everywhere for over 12 years and updated every 30 days and never heard anything.

Now that’s the honest truth!! It’s worth considering that even with FedEx hiring so much (I thought it was 800 and change but let’s call it 1000), there are still so many qualified pilots on the street. 1000 pilots getting hired isn’t all that much. And no doubt highly competitive. What’s the secret sauce to get hired anywhere? Really wish I knew. But the only thing I can say definitively is this:
1. Persistence
2. Treat everyone well!
3. Maintain a humble yet competent attitude.
4. Network your butt off! (It’s worth noting that as you network, be honest with your intentions. Don’t pretend to be someone’s friend just for a recommendation. Basically be professional)

Outside of those 4, I’m in the dark!

Naval Aviation mafia is strong at FedEx. I’d imagine they’ll pick up a whole lot of military aviators out of that 1000.

Yeah this right here and you can toss in the military guys/gals furloughed right now. The amount of regional pilots hired will probably be less than 1% and that will be to fill a metric.

It sucks but I can’t see it being great for us other than it moves a few more out of they way once hiring resumes everywhere.

Just goes to show you that regionals are there to keep you at the regionals. Everyone says it’s a “stepping stone” but that really isn’t the case based on the sentiment on these boards.

I really don’t believe the regional pilot recruiters know the true facts or statistics at large. Besides that fact most regionals want some form of turnover to keep the costs down eg Express Jet v Commut Air.

It’s all a matter of statistics. Take the record hiring from 2019 alone. Between the big 3, FedEx, UPS, AS, HA, and JB they probably hired a combined total of 1700 pilots in 2019. Out of 15,000 pilots at the regionals there were probably 5,000 well qualified and competitive. Then there’s the military, and charter, and other. Quite competitive and that was during the one of the biggest hiring years.

The big three alone hired over 2000 in 2019.

The numbers I crunched came to about 24000 at the regionals in 2019.

Making the road to a major just that more competitive.

Becoming a pilot is a gamble. heck even CAE came out a few weeks back and said that the spruiking the schools and universities are doing now is 'irresponsible'.

I see it this way. If your going to be a pilot you better give yourself the best shot of making a major from day dot. i.e. become a mil pilot and if you can't do that then don't enter the ring. Its just far too competitive.

Not all mil pilots end up at majors. Some platforms rack up hours (heavies). Others don’t. Some Marine Hornet guys have been getting out at the end of their service commitment below ATP mins and going to the regionals. Many of them were flying single digit hours per month. Imagine leaving active duty after 10 years, as a Major, with 900TT. I left with around that, but now you factor in a few years unemployed due to covid, and I would have been far better off going civilian from the start.

It’s the pilot version of ‘choose your rate, choose your fate.’

Ridiculous statement. Half of the pilots at the majors are civilians.
