That isn't new, the limitations/memory items test has always been a required 100%

It was taken away for a while, I am talking about the written exam, it is given during systems......I guess the last few years you were just required on your oral to know them, now I guess they just started giving the written also again about a month ago.

Possibly, I know 2 1/2 years ago when I went thorugh training it was there. Some guys I know that went through 6 months ago had it too. There was a period of about 6 months we didn't hire after which they radically reworked teh new-hire program, that led to some issues when training started again.

Also, a guy in our class didn't pass it on the first try. He got a second attempt. Unfortunately, he had some other issues later on and didn't make it.

dbo861 07-04-2007 05:22 PM

I began training in March, and the first time we were tested on Limitations and Memory Items was on the checkride.

Ripeagle 07-06-2007 08:23 AM

Hey guys - how long is Comair training? Are your "weekends" during training actually Saturday/Sunday, or during the week? When you finish training, do you start IOE right away, or are there delays? Thanks.

The Chow 07-06-2007 09:21 AM

Sim

I just passed the check ride. We didn't do any of the departures or approaches for JFK. Some guys got the LDA in to DCA. My ride concentrated on the visual approach....As in your at 10,000' on the down wind and cleared to land.

I started in March also and never took the memory items test. In fact the most I got test on them was from my sim instructor. My oral, I got asked a total of 3 (THREE!) memory items. And one was what to do with emergency power only msg. (Which is ADG deploy) However do be prepared for non-memory limitations.

The Chow 07-06-2007 11:56 AM

Memory Items

Even though some folks may not have been asked many I would make it a point to know chapter 2. I was asked a few things that weren't doubled boxed but would sure be important on a flight.

CRJDriver 07-06-2007 12:30 PM

The reason they brought back the memory items/limitations test is because people have been busting the oral because of Chapter 2/Memory items. There are a few IOE captains that like to quiz you on limitations during IOE trips;) Just make sure you know them cold.

During ground "weekends" were Sat/Sun. During sim, it all depends on what schedule you bid. We're 3 on, 1 off, 3 on 2 off, 3 on, 2 off, 4 on. (If I remember correctly without looking...) I hear IOE is about a 2 wk wait right now.

When my ground school started back in March, they told us we'd start IOE within a week of the checkride. Right before going to the sims, they told us the line check airmen were backed up and it'd be at least 2 weeks before we'd start IOE. After my checkride, I actually waited 3 weeks before my first IOE trip, and I was one of the first guys in my class to begin. I'm not sure what the current wait time for IOE is, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's up to a month to 5 weeks. That wait time will start coming down now that they have slowed down the hiring.

Diver Driver 07-07-2007 03:46 PM

For those of you that went through Comair's training, did you guys need your laptop while you were there? I have one, but it is all messed up and probably wont be reliable, wasnt sure if I should get a new one.

not for training, but it is nice to have in my hotel room, it also keeps me from studying a lot.... I have to close it and hide it, so I wont go online...... The hotel room gets boring

I'm on IOE right now, watied 2 weeks to the day. My sim partner only waited 1 week. They hired, or trained a bunch of new check airmen and got caught up.

Speedbird172 07-08-2007 01:32 PM

What do you guys do in the meantime while waiting for IOE? Are you able to get home for a bit?

Hmmmmmm are you saying they hired internally or off the street check airmen, I may be reading this wrong.

Internally.

I think the wait for observations right now is about 1.5 weeks. IOE is about 2-2.5 weeks. Enjoy your (paid) time off, because once you start hitting the line, you wish you would have this much time off.

Oh, don't worry. You have plenty of time off when you're on the line. It's called "being on reserve."

Are reserve pilots not flying alot, or did I miss the sarcasm?! :D

dbo861 07-09-2007 05:08 AM

Not as much as I thought. I've been on reserve for almost a month now and I've only had 3 trips so far. Each have been 1 and 2 day trips.

That's not a lot at all... are you at CVG or JFK?

Paok 07-12-2007 04:49 AM

YAY! Im done training, no calls or anything its been 4 days, any idea how long I will be waiting before IOE or observation or even cheif pilot orientation... They told me I could leave, so I drove home!

POPA 07-12-2007 05:10 AM

A guy in my CHQ newhire class left AWAC because he was tired of not flying, if that gives you any insight into reserve life.

Congrats with being finished, I'm right behind you so I'm curious as to how long you will be waiting, let us know when you get called. How was training? Any difficult spots you can identify that people might have trouble with?

Training was fine, great instructors... Indoc and systems is really easy (the tests) Just keep up with the systems AFTER class is done bc I purged everything and had to go back over it all in the sim... Almost my whole oral was systems with limitations and some weather, but mostly systems, so dont forget it like I did.... During ground school the class got together a few times and went out, but that came to a quick halt when sim started. I'd say sim was the hardest part, ground school was realllly easy, and this is comming from a low timer. Had no problems in sim, or extra sims, but it was hard getting up at 3am, then forcing myself to study the rest of the day after sim.

In regard to the other post, apparently you fly "a lot" at Comair on reserve COMPARED to other airlines...... I guess I will see. I heard IOE is backed up a few weeks, but I am not complaing, I could use the vacation... We all started to get a little nutty that last week or so of being couped up in the holiday inn....I drove from KY to Philly 30 min after my ticket was signed..... I was ready to get out of there... Good luck, and have fun!

Thanks, I appreciate the inside info. Get some rest and enjoy the time off. They didn't give your class the option of staying in the apartments they have now? Anything I should study before starting other than the Kinkos cards?

CRJDriver 07-12-2007 08:59 AM

It was 13 days for me from checkride to observation. I'm glad they went back to only 4 legs, instead of 8, 'cause the CRJ jumpseat is uncomfortable as hell. It should only be a week or less after observation for IOE. BTW, I wouldn't count on Flight Standards to call you. I would check SBS on a daily basis, cause they never called me and I'm glad I checked. Also, if you are doing observations or IOE out of CVG, they will have to provide you with a lodging (if you are JFK based)!

Flight standards is extremly busy with all the new IOE pilots so, us in scheduling have been taking alot of there calls, unfortunatly we cant help you guys. So check SBS daily cause its seems to be changing all the the time, with the IOE pilots.

cessna126 07-12-2007 02:46 PM

ftrpilot, what is your name? That way maybe I can get to know a scheduler so I dont get tagged with so manny ready reserves

cfiguy11 07-12-2007 06:41 PM

for all you new guys who were wondering about reserve in JFK, i sat long call reserve for half of may, june and july and i hold a line in august. Long call out of JFK is not that bad. Alot of getting paid to sit at home. Cant complain one bit

May 21st class. Put in my standing bid during Indoc and during the last award, those of us who bid CVG got the transfer date of Dec. 1st.

Okay... thanks, that's the time frame I was expecting. Is crash padding out there tough or are there an abundance of places to stay? Also, what does per-diem usually average out to each month. Just trying to get a general idea of how to budget.

captaincraig44 07-13-2007 01:31 PM

You had asked a couple posts back about IOE. I completed my check ride in late April, and I completed IOE with 41 hours of flying on Fathers Day, 6 weeks later. I had the first three or four trips I was assigned for IOE taken from me due to others needing more time. It was a full three weeks before my first line flight after the sim ride. Enjoy the time off, after that, it's pedal to the metal. I was on my first trip three day after the IOE sign-off. Going to try the L2 long call out from DEN in Aug. Should be interesting, but at least I'll be able to be at home instead of some crappy crashpad in a questionable neighborhood in Queens . . .

Paok 07-13-2007 01:38 PM

I think 12 hours would be pretty hard commuting all the way from DEN, let alone fly in from anywhere wouldnt it?

Alknew182 07-14-2007 10:25 AM

Hey I'm new to the forum just thought I would try to make some friends with those of you who are working at comair.... I was hired a few weeks back and start on the 7/30 class, how many others will be joining me?

Speedbird172 07-14-2007 02:31 PM
