How many hours did you new hires have?

I was hired just shy of 800/100 for the 7/30 class; pretty sure there have been others with less time.:D

saxman66 07-19-2007 07:21 PM

I've been sitting since June 24th to start IOE. I finally start on the 23rd. 4 weeks for me to start IOE. Don't know why. Some guys are already on IOE that finished after me (CRJDriver). I sure have the most time off from anyone though. Dad's telling me to stop sitting around the house.:)

Wow! That's a long time. Nice paid vacation, though. Are you concerned about having a month between sims and IOE?

Awesome, congrats. Same class date I got, cya there! PS: do you work at Sportys, if you do I think we know each other??

down2mins 07-25-2007 05:17 PM

Congrats guys! I just passed my checkride on Sunday and am waiting for my observation flights... let me know if you need any "during training" advice! :)

No, I don't I'm down in Florida instructing at ERAU. Looking forward to getting back to Comair. Did you work at Sportys? Maybe you could hook us up with Jepp binders? :D I'll see you there. You know of anybody else on here that is starting in our class? Oh yeah, any "during training" advice will be gladly accepted. I went through the training once as an intern and all I can really say is study what they give you when they give it to you.

Diver Driver 07-26-2007 08:37 AM

No, did all my training at Sportys though. Never instructed, flew skydivers instead. I dont have any jepp binders unfortunately, would be nice though.:D

flyandive 07-26-2007 09:36 AM

Well, that explains your screen name. That's awesome, we got Skydive Deland out by us and they almost always have two jump planes going constantly sometimes three.
Anyway, It will be great knowing there are a lot of Comair folks on here, really helpful. Sounds like a few people here are in our class. Two friends of mine are going through training right now. One that was May 21st and the other July 9th. I also went for the apartment option, which sounds a lot nicer than the hotel. If you are local are you still going to be living in the apartment?

On Autopilot 07-26-2007 09:41 AM

When I went to the Comair open house, they talked about hiring loooooow time pilots like around 300ish and give them a free jet bridge course. Is that still holding true or is Comair content with what they have for now?

As far as I know, the mins. are still 600/100, but I know a few people that have been hired with less than 100 Multi, but had over 600 TT. The lowest I have seen is around 400 TT. They still do the "Launch program", which is somewhat of a jet-transition course.

Welcome to all the new Comair new-hires on here!

Congratulations!

I'm starting 8/27 too. Diver Driver and I met on the same interview date back in June. I chose the apartment option. It's too good to pass up.

That's 3 of us. Anyone else?

Makes me wonder how many in the class? Around 10 maybe? Anybody know if the classes are getting bigger or smaller?

Yea, it is going to cut out a 30 min commute for me. Plus I'll be able to study with you guys and get to know everyone and it will eliminate distractions at home when it comes to studying, my brother and sis are still in grade/high school and pretty loud...lol

I spoke with one of my friends who is an FO earlier today and he said that he heard Comair is only hiring 10-12 per month right now. I don't know where he heard it.

Sounds about right. Classes seem to be about 10. Last fall they were running them about every two weeks. Spring every week, then now it seems to be somewhat sporadic but at least one a month.

CRJDriver 07-26-2007 06:58 PM

Yeah, last I heard is that there are only 1 or 2 classes per month. A few months ago it was every week. We were suppose to have 16 in our class, but ended up with only 8.

mregan 07-26-2007 07:45 PM

How much of a chance would I have with 500TT 120 ME and 2 reccomendations from two current COMAIR pilots????

I'd say about 100% haha, seriously though get your app in and even without the reccomendations you'd have a good shot. Nothing to lose right?

RiddleEagle18 07-27-2007 05:58 AM

Welcome to Comair guys. The company announced last week that they are only hiring 10-12 a month. However in the same e-mail literally 2 lines down they say attrition is 20 a month?? If you talk to scheduling they are begging people to work extra and we are canceling flights due to lack of crews. So obviously it makes sense to hire less pilots than are leaving. My guess is that hiring will pick up again to the 30-40 a month range fairly soon. Rumbling from the training department is that they already know that and are preparing for it. Good luck guys. Training department is great they will due everything they can to help you but make sure they know if you are having trouble.

I haven't heard this. From what I've heard, scheduling will fly your @ss off, but once you get your 100 hours, they hardly use you at all until you get a line. A guy in my crash pad has only flown 20 hours in July. Also, if you look at most airlines, they have an average of 10 pilots per aircraft in the fleet. At Comair, we have 130ish planes and over 1600 pilots. I really don't think there's much of a staffing problem now.

Your right we have only cancelled a handful of flights for crew availabilty. However we have been downsizing alot of flight to 50 seaters, cause of lack of F.O. in the 70 seaters. However alot of new F.O. coming online in a few weeks so hopefully it should balance it self out soon.

JFK is kicking are A$S with the time out issues.

Paok 07-27-2007 06:19 PM

Anyone know anything about the parking passes at JFK, I dont have one yet and I parked in long term, do we get reimbursed?

I guess the company finally got sick of us canceling flights for commuter clause issues when bad weather is on the way. I got an automated call from the company last night saying there would be bad weather in JFK on sat and sun and they were willing to pay for commuters hotels if they came up early. JFK is terrible because of the way the ramp and boarding gates are run and unfortunately that is Mother D. Then they will turn around and blame Comair for the delays. Off my box. Don't let us discourage you, just think after the door is closed you are payed by the minute.

flyandive 07-28-2007 02:29 PM

For those that work for Comair who is CVG and who is JFK? Right now I'm thinking I would rather live by CVG (shorter commute) but I also actually want to work, so my question is how much flying are the CVG folks getting vs. those that are JFK? What are you guys doing for living arrangements at JFK and how long is reserve at each base? I know we've talked about that but it seems to change fairly frequently. I know this is assuming that I have a choice which I probably won't have but I don't want to bid for something I don't want.

Can't help you with the amt of flying in each since I'm just waiting to start IOE. But... our class was all told we were going to JFK. However, they let us put in a standing bid. About 2 weeks later, they put out new awards and I got CVG as of Dec. 1. With all the shifting of GSO & MCO crews, my best guess is that reserve times will go up in both CVG & JFK since the crews of the closing bases are relatively senior. Just my 2 cents...

Yeah, that's what I'm figuring too. Just wondering what it's going to to be. I think reserve in CVG would be a lot easier but on the other hand it would be a lot longer than JFK. By the way which class are you in? May 21st?

Remember that just because we are closing the two bases, doesn't mean that we are losing flying. All the flying that these bases were getting will just be shifted to JFK and CVG originating trips. Even though more senior pilots are coming to JFK and CVG, more flying is also going to be at these bases, so I don't think reserve times will changed much.

down2mins 07-28-2007 05:12 PM

Good point. I hope that's the case then.

Yes, I was in the May 21st class.

Yes, until Mesa starts invading JFK with the -900s for Delta...

TristarJS30 07-28-2007 05:35 PM

I was surprised when I read the email from crewmember services that said we only have about 60-65% of the flights out of JFK... then I walked out to the plane on Tuesday and had to walk by two Freedom ERJs and a Dash8, and two Chautauqua ERJs to get to our lone CRJ out there. But I've seen nights where it's only CRJ's too.

cfiguy11 07-28-2007 08:13 PM

Personally i like it up at JFK. It is a much younger, more laid back atmosphere. I have had a blast on trips with the crew. If you can have a decent commute to JFK, i would choose that over Cinci any day of the week

As far as reserve in JFK, i dont know what it is at the moment but i only sat reserve for 2.5 months. There are 41 people leaving JFK to go to CVG the first of the month and alot of people from MCO and GSO are coming up to JFK so we'll see what that does to things.

I flew my a$$ off in May and once i got my 100 hrs, i havent done sh$t. Almost 20 days off in July. Cant complain.

Been following the forums for quite some time, just got the time to post here. I just got the call for the 9-10 class. Nice meeting" you all, and hope training goes well. I got a buddy in the 8-27 class named Andy as well, so go easy on him :)..he's a good guy.

Keep the posts comin!

Why do you want to work more? With the new reserve leveling system that basically bypasses you after you reach 60 hours, you are going to make the same pay whether you work 2 hours or 75 hours. I don't know about you, but for me its the most $$$ for the least work.

Also, guys in the upgrade class ahead of me were waiting 6+ weeks for IOE, What a great vacation.
