Jets were pretty loud back then too, look at what they've done with current generation turbofans.
The rear engine, front fan configuration is probably done to shield the fans from each other with the tail/fuselage, for blade-off certification.
I mean it looks plausibly certifiable, just not sure about the economics of a clean-sheet design like that.
