Compass - Thoughts?
MSU, Mankato 2005 graduate - 535TT, 65ME (CFI/CFII/MEI) - currently driving skydivers (175 hours since April).
First of all, thanks to everyone for all of the wonderful information/advice on this site. I'm primarily interested in applying at Mesaba at the end of August, but I'm also interested in a few other regionals. The upgrade time at American Eagle is somewhat intimidating, and XJT may be more of move than what I'm looking for at this time.
I'm just wondering what any of you have heard about Compass. Do you think Compass has any future with NW or is Compass a temporary flash in the pan until NW decides to get rid of them? Thanks.

Interesting...I mean, I've been reading (here) about how many of new hires have a significant amount of time....however;
I know one of the check airman at Compass (E175) and he had some interesting things to say about Compass. He told me they are hiring street captains and some very low-time pilots. He seemed very frustrated with the experience level of some of the new people he's been tasked to go on IOEs with. In fact (on a recent trip), he said he lost count as to how many times he took the controls away from a brand new FO out on his IOE. That FO had less than 400TT.
So what's the deal?

Almost every new hire that I know of has experience in the 121 world. Competitive minimums for compass have been >4000TT and 1000 Turbine. The majority of folks have turbine PIC. Most of those who don't have either time in type or close connections to Compass managers (IE they were previously Independence Air First Officers).
They are hiring street captains. Actually everybody they have hired so far has been hired as and assigned a captain slot (MSP E175 CA).
I'd love to know who you've talked to since I know most of the Compass managers and checkairmen. I find it hard to believe that "he" has been doing a bunch of IOE since the IOE instructors and managers had their Fed Rides only a week ago. I can tell you that there's NOBODY at Compass that has less than 1000TT.

Okay, good to know. Thanks.
Probably just a misunderstanding of the information I was given. It seems rather unrealistic that anyone with such low time would be put in the position of an E175 FO, but I've been wrong before.

Just wanted to clarify on this topic (and end any rumors right here).
Everybody on the Compass seniority list that has been hired off the street (IE not at Compass via NWA flow down process), has been hired either as a manager or as a street captain.
Captain minimums (per the just signed Compass Pilot Agreement) are 2500TT/1000ME or 2000TT/1500ME. To my knowledge no waivers to this upgrade requirement have been granted (which requires MEC approval), although a couple of folks there don't have any experience as turbine PIC (they were "career FO's" at other airlines).
I know of no "400TT" pilots at compass, and wouldn't expect them in the near future given the number of applications they have from much more qualified individuals.
