Recently read somewhere they are going to redo it yet again.
Hey Auto, maybe the furloughees should get together and recreate it while wearing full uniforms and pins that say 3825 DL, Say NO to Soap, ALPA rulezzz
, etc. What do you think?. Any pins ideas?.
Just because this year's president of the company said people are picking up the slack doesn't mean it's true. I am aware of a number of issues with flights being cancelled or significantly delayed due to lack of non-fatigued crews and lack of enthusiasm.
The gate agent handling our originating flight from CVG just a couple of days ago actually thanked us for showing up - that's how bad it's been as a result of the level of abuse that has built up over the years combined with the current level of staffing.
I am aware of one senior Captain who refused to fly as a First Officer to cover a shortage just this last week. This individual, who has far more to lose than any furloughee, put themselves in the line of fire for those of you on the street. Of course you're never going to hear that from this year's president of Comair...who also commutes positive space to and from work while telling those in the trenches at Comair that they should be thankful for what travel benefits they have.
The credit for mismanaging the airline into the position it "needed" to execute a mass pilot furlough...some of whom were only on the property for three months, can only be directed at management in Atlanta and the G.O. in CVG. Atlanta is where the decision first originated to place a number of new 900's at Comair, then three months later decided to place them at Pinnacle, then two months later decided to place them at Mesaba, then three months later decided to place them at ASA/Skywest.
This is not written to trivialize what you've suffered during your Comair experience...there simply is no excuse for the way Atlanta has managed Comair. This is just an attempt to identify where the ultimate responsibility lies for the continued inability of Comair to succeed.
Delta took Comair through bankruptcy just prior to your arrival. Under oath, management admitted Comair was expected to produce a $50 million profit during that year. It wasn't enough.
Management, under oath, stated that after bankruptcy mandated concessions from its employees Comair would be competitive. Delta has subsequently removed roughly 35% of the fleet, and flying, that was operated at that time by Comair. Sound competitive?
Management in Atlanta, since 2004, has made decision after decision that has not benefitted Comair as a company. There is no indication that will change in the future. Why is anyone hoping for a recall?
To blame the union for the decisions made in Atlanta shows local leadership in Cincinnati has been successful in deflecting blame from themselves and Atlanta, onto the employees of the company. It's so obvious that the reason Comair can't succeed is because of its workforce...isn't it?
I am not the reason for the continued inability of Comair to succeed. Neither are you, or the union.
Best wishes for the challenges you face while furloughed. I am hopeful you find success in other endeavors so that if/when you get a recall notice you are in a position to say "No thanks. You can't afford me anymore." I envy you because there are so many other things of more importance and financial reward I could be doing if I weren't spending 340 hours per month away from home in an attempt to "stick around because things might get better".

I know of two certain captains that are picking up as much time as they can. I'm furloughed, and they told me they were (Nice!). I could care less what anyone at Comair does anymore. There are not going to be any recalls, there will only be more furloughs and bad treatment of the employees that are left. The only thing I can hope for is that they furlough some F/A's in the near future so that my fiance' can get the heck out of there and still have some benefits for a while. She does not want to be there anymore, and tells me all the unhappiness of the crew lounge, etc. Each month she bids a reserve window, and every week they change the window from day to day to suit THEIR needs, and moving soft days is just a routine thing anymore. Come off a trip at 6pm, the evening before a soft day and think you'll catch a flight home for your one day off? Forget it, you have a PWM out and back until 11pm, so figure on spending your off day at your crash pad because we changed your window to 6AM the following day.
The longer I am away from there, the more I think how relieving it is to not be there.
irrelevant,
I think this is a case where a few people paint a whole group. I knew of a few captains who were picking up open time after the November furloughs but before the January furloughs got me.
They were laughing about how much $$ they were going to make. There was another person who was a captain and is now an FO doing the same. His statement was that he had to make up for the loss of income. It strikes me as ironic that the more someone picks up open time the less they will need to recall anyone or upgrade anyone.
Those are the only two instances that I am aware. But when that is combined with flight attendants who were hired 6 months after me and are still on propery, a furloughee's mind can wonder and create all of kinds of scenarios.
I don't really have a dog in this race but I am conflicted. I was a 1,000 hour wiz kid with no turbine time and Comair hired, and trained me. The captains I flew with were very helpful getting me past those initial hurdles where the airplane, airspace, and proceedures in general left me in the tail cone of the plane. But as the flying became routine, the more I became aware of the abuse. I was on reserve my entire time at Comair.
Before I left the property I was spending 8 nights a month at home. That SUCKED! And as much as I miss flying with you guys, I am painfully aware of the price I paid to fly the nice new shiney CRJ700/900. I am also aware that most likely we will be merged with Mesaba and just when you thought things couldn't get worse........I have spoken before about not coming back and I really can't see any change in culture at Comair that will change my mind.
Good luck to those on the line,
The Chow

I could never figure out the whole "I gotta fly the 700/900!" thing, maybe because I never really cared what I was flying, as long as I was flying, and the fact that I actually like JFK and hate CVG. I held a line after one month at JFK and held that until November 2008, then took COLA in December, so really only had two weeks of reserve at the end in 2009.
Only problem is now your out there in the mix with lower hours than many, looking for the same jobs. I have close to 4000 hours and 1300 jet now, and can't get a call back. I'll never go back to 1st year regional pay, it is not worth that, but as it is in this industry, I still feel it's WHO you know, not WHAT you know.
OK...I'm spitting feathers., I was wrong Mother D...last night on this post I was complaining about Deltanet/Travelnet's weekend transition to incorporate NW.
Well, this AM I had to get back on and to my surprise it was working well, AND seems to have been improved with more features. But, I'm still suspicious given management's ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, so it's still in Beta with me.

It's normal to need to vent frustration. Anyone currently employed by, or furloughed from Comair has every right to be frustrated with the inability of the company to succeed.
If we allow this to turn into a Jr. vs. Sr. issue because of misplaced ire it does none of us any good, and benefits the N.W.A. style management.
I don't doubt there are a handful of pilots who are picking up extra flying. There pretty much always will be. I do know there is a substantial percentage of the seniority list who are only doing the absolute minimum required...and actively looking for opportunities to do even less.
Again, I wish everyone currently employed by, or furloughed from Comair the best. I hope some day in the future I have the opportunity to fly with you, but I understand events beyond our control may well prevent that from happening.
