Default What is HR looking for?

Hi, I have been wanting to get input on this for a while. From the people that have been through interviews successfully, what is HR looking for when they call you up on the phone and ask "why this airline" and questions similar to that. I'm trying to picture myself in their shoes because I'm sure they catch more crap than a toilet with that question. Thank for any input. Joe

Default Maybe they want....the truth?

If they ask why you want to come to XYZ Airlines you should just answer the question truthfully. ( I know it's a tad outlandish to think something is that straightforward) There has to be some reason why you want to work for a company you're interviewing with and if there's not, perhaps you should try interviewing elsewhere.

I agree with GF. "Be yourself" is at the top of most recruiters' lists for ways not to screw up an interview. There are so many interview prep advisors out there trying to get your money, and they have to come up with something to offer, but the reality in my experience is that it just isn't that hard to give a good interview unless maybe you're especially challenged in basic social interaction (which a lot of interview prep courses will only make worse if you ask me). Start with the assumption that they wouldn't be interviewing you if they didn't want to hire you. Maybe that will help you not to try too hard.

Now, that said, maybe you could use something like this as a starting point: Based on your experience, research, whatever (it should be based on something), you've arrived at a clear and specific understanding of what you want in your next job - and what you have to offer - and you believe this company is a good match because... you fill in the blank with something that you know is true and hopefully unique about them. Remember, their job is to hire new pilots - as long as you don't give them a reason not to, why shouldn't they hire you? Questions like why this company, and many others that interviewers ask are just intended to find out whether you actually have a real answer and some sense of direction, or if you're just shooting your resume at anything that moves.

Just my two cents

I have interviewed with Great Lakes, Trans States, American Eagle and ASA. I was offered 2 out of 4. The 2 i did not get had to due with lower multi-time than my competition at Great Lakes and busting the sim at Eagle. I have read all those interview prep books and even took a class at Embry-Riddle about interviewing. I have to say SpatialD is correct. I know it is easier said than done but relax and be yourself. That allows them to see the REAL you and helps you to think more clearly and show confidence. So preparing for these interviews is the key. How bad do you want it and remember that the other guy/girl is probably at Starbucks studying their butt off and doing their research. You have to make yourself stand out and tell them what you have to offer the company. Be honest with your answers but dont back yourself into a corner. So what's your biggest weakness? Answer that and turn it into something positive. It's also about attitude. Are you a positive, easy going person that they can stand flying with for 4 days at a time. Dont settle to just pass the writtens...study harder and get them all right. When asked why us? What I did was just tell them what I liked about the company and told them why I was a good person for the job.....example. I like that ASA has never furloughed in 26 years. I like how positive the attitude is around here and the safety record that ASA has. I can bring to ASA a safe pilot, knows the importance of good customer service, and a good team player. Then i just gave honest examples of each one of those. Make sure you give examples...dont just say I am professional....tell them how you are. This is just my experience and hope it helps some....good luck!

Just be yourself is the key...Many people have botched the sim and such...Airlines are not looking for superman or chuck yeager - they want decent people with confidence and sound flying skills...
