Default Resume

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the correct place for this, if not I appologize and moderators please move it.

I'm a newly minted commercial multi-engine pilot. I'm wanting to gain a lot more experience before I move over to the 121 world but I would like to start getting paid to fly, or at the very least not have to pay to fly. With the market the way it is and the so called "pilot shortage" I would like to be in a position to be hirable by the time I graduate college in December.
With that being said, does anyone have any resume tips for me? I've looked over APC cover letter and resume tutorials but I would appreciate any additional input. I'm also curious if anyone has any time building suggestions for the IL/MO/IN region.
Thanks for your help, Trevor

do you have a CFI?

if no, then get one. opportunities are pretty limited if you don't have that CFI. worst case it'll give you that chance encounter with a guy looking for someone to fly his plane.

otherwise, pipeline inspection and traffic flying are about all you can do

dude I am serious, the aerial survey season is booming right now and you will easily fly 100 hours a month. and YES they hire guys with fresh commercial.

You can fly skydivers. Depending on the company's policies regarding minimum time required...dropping divers can be a fun experience. It's really great real-world type flying too.

Some companies want 300-500 minimum TT. Mins are usually higher for the companies that use twins. I got lucky and found a local company that took me with around 300 flying C182's. In almost 2 years, I doubled my TT.

I would echo the previous poster though...get your CFI.

Resume' writing can be very complex. My best suggestion is get up with some of your friends/mentor and ask them what they did. Also you can get books or articles on resume' writing and formats from the web and public library.
With the winter months coming I see the unusual time building jobs starting to come to a close. I.E. jump plane, and banner/ glider towing. I CFI'd for 2 years before my first true job. Although the industry has changed quite a bit since then. If you willing to relocate to other destinations, this probably will open up other doors if the CFI thing is not your forte'.

Thanks, a lot of good answers. I've thought about getting a CFI but I'm not sure if that would be right for me. I've flown with a lot of disinterested CFIs and I don't want to be one of them. I'm going to look into skydiver flying and survey stuff. I've also been offered an opportunity to fly part 91 legs with a 135 cargo operator. What do you think about applying to a place like Piedmont with minimums? I don't feel like I am owed a 121 job with a fresh ticket but if it is possible...

well, you at least have the right attitude. too many people have a sense of entitlement to the biggest, shiniest jet as soon as their Commercial temporary is signed.

apply to piedmont. you just might get in. from their you can either build time and get on somewhere else, or stick around.

worst case is they say no thanks, and you do the part 91 flying of those 135 ops.

anyway you can get flight time (esp multi) without whoring yourself out is a good thing

Explain who you you would go through for the pipeline or survey gig. Where do you find these jobs? Is it mostly word of mouth. I will be in this same situation in the spring and have a family to support so not paying for additional time is key to my success.

well its true they arent as easy to find as CFI gigs which are much more plentiful... but you can find tons of non-part 91 gigs on climbto350 for example. and as a matter of fact, i found my survey job through APC!!! (read some people talking about it, exchanged a few PMs, then called up the guy.)

I'll have to check out all of your suggestions. My school (SIU) also has a aviation career fair at the end of October. I'll hopefully get to talk with a few prospective employers or at least get interview experience.
