FWIW, I used Telex 850's for a while but went back to my old headset after 1 pairing.. just not quiet enough for me.

It is all personal preference. I would say that you could just go without if you want; FOM requires them up to 18k though. It seems a lot of guys just use the DC's stored in the airplanes. I have seen only a handful of guys that are using the Telex 750/850 genre of headsets. I was using Bose X's prior to the Telex 850, so maybe I was just a little spoiled by the noise reduction.

Indeed... Just made the switch to the Bose X's and I feel much better after flights... FWIW anyway...

There are a lot of airlines that have a TSO'd headset requirement in their ops spec. Make sure yours isn't one before doing this. Believe it or not, feds have busted people for this one.
