It will be cool for you to be an instructor. I am sure teaching people to land a C-172 will make you a much better airline pilot. Then you will have many former students who can walk your resume in after you get tired of doing pattern work. You can then swing the gear for your former students...they will be in the left seat and you will be in the right. Just like old times!!! HAHA
There is nothing wrong with being a flight instructor...just make sure the time you are building will help you get a job. Cross Country time...Actual Inst. ME time. etc.
Don't listen to him. He is probably at Mesa or TSA. Get your time to get on at a quality regional. With all these merger talks, recessions, and age 65 you might be there for a while. You'll be higher up on the seniority list when your students jump ship to another regional.

In all seriousness, this is a good bulletin board to be on if you want to educate yourself about your career aspirations and get advice from people who have been there and done that. But, just as a side note, I would suggest you also become a member and active participant on AOPA's forums (must be an AOPA member though -- http://forums.aopa.org), which are entirely focused on GA flying. Some old GA guys on there have the attitude that airlines are evil and young instructors are only in it to take advantage of the free time to get them to a regional (so don't go blabbing about wanting an airline career or you'll be flamed). But, like this forum, there's also a lot of good information shared on there that will help you through your ratings and offer a broader perspective on different types of flying. They helped me tremendously through my progression of certificates and ratings. Good luck!

Do you have to take the written once employed by a 121 in order for it not to expire? Or can you have it done beforehand and then get hired, and you don't have to worry about it expiring?

My advice is to finish your degree before you start working for an airline. Enjoy college and your flight training/instructing in the meantime. Enjoy the journey. When you start flying a jet, you'll find it's slightly overrated.
