California is the world's 5th largest economy because the rest of the world subsidizes California b/c of the movie biz. How much TV and Feature film comes from Cali compared to the rest of the world. How much money do you spend at the movie theater and how much of that goes back to Cali instead of your home state. Furthermore, California may be the 5th largest economy but it is also neck deep in debt.

Part of the reason why people are so protective of the environment in California is we have some of the best environment in the entire world. People who have lived here long enough realize we cannot just destroy the environement, because if we don't it will "harm the economy." I would much rather pay 1 cent per kilowatt hour more than the national average for my electricity to have some of the best environment in the world protected.

And besides, our strict environmental policies have done so much to harm our economy [/SARCASM] By itself, California is the WORLD'S 5th largest economy. Do you ever wonder why property value is so expensive in California? Because we take care of our environment.
You obviously don't own a home, run a business or earn very much salary to be willing to pay an additional 1 cent per kilowatt. I guess my vote will cancel out your vote...

It's precisely socialist policy like this that made me leave my native Norway in search of the American dream and now we have it gaining popularity in America These leftist policies have propelled thousands of people to leave California to go live in the middle of the Arizona/Nevade desert in search of greater QOL.

Califonia is so restrictive/expensive for business, labor regulations, workers comp, state payroll tax, court system that it has driven thousands of small/medium firms to leave.

Last time I checked Toyota and Honda produce more cars here and employ more people in the United States then the Detroit three. If I remember correctly Ford is made in Mexico and GMC is in Canada and Mexico.

I heard someone use my name in vain.

I don't have any answers as to the future of oil prices, if I did I would be drinking on my yacht instead of typing. There is one absolute truth though-free markets will keep energy flowing and react faster than any deadbeat politician can clear his throat and ask for a steering commitee to undertake a decades long study of what we should do.

Update on MMGW and Manbearpig-it is looking like they gave the Nobel to the wrong guy, but lawfirms are having a field day billing $700 an hour for environmental studies and people buying "carbon credits" from themselves are doing OK too.

Well said sir!

Economic reality is a distant and unexplored planet for many.

yes, but they didn't until californians started buying toyotas and honda's b/c they were "better" for environment. In order for Ford and GM to compete they had to move manufacturing overseas.

Funny, every Norwegian I've met would fit right in my beloved "red" states.
Keep the faith in Norway, and many props for staying out of that damn EU.

California is the largest state in the country. We have more than 30 million residents (more than 10% of the US population). And more than 35% of our power comes from renewable sources (wind, solar, and hydroelectric). We also get a decent portion (compared to the rest of the country) from nuclear power.

So why can't the rest of the United States follow our lead? I think it is perfectly realistic. If we did it, why can't you?

Yes. That must be it. We get all our money from Hollywood.
  • Nevermind the fact that the Silicon Valley is the technology capital of the world.
  • Nevermind the fact that the Central Valley produces more fruit and vegetables than any other place on earth
  • Nevermind the fact that California is the biotechnology capital of the US
  • Nevermind the fact that several of the world's largest corporations call California home... (Google, Apple, Chevron, Sun Microsystems, Franklin Templeton, and Oracle world headquarters are all within 30 miles of my house)
It must be the movie business.
