Next comment is on the environmental damage caused by electric cars. First off, the Toyota Prius IS NOT an electric car. The Toyota Prius is a gas car that stores excess energy in a battery to help power the car at slower speeds. An electric car would not have a Nickel battery, it would probably have a Lithium Ion battery (like the one in your laptop). Would you rather have a Lithium Ion battery (in an electric car), or a lead-acid battery (in virtually every gas powered car). You don't need to be an engineer to know which one is better for the environment.
Batteries are not the best thing for the environment, and we know that. But how about a hydrogen fuel cell car. Water is not damaging to the environment. How do you get H2 on earth?? You use electricity. This is why we need an alternative source of electricity. How we store the energy is the second part of the equation.

But yeah, Central Connecticut State University... yeah
Yes I’m aware the Prius is not a full blown "electric car". I think most folks call em hybrids or something. I just find it ironic that people are so ignorant and think that their Prius is saving the environment. (not implying you are) And I agree we need to find new sources for generating electricity, but unless that happens soon, the ignorant folks will be driving their "electric cars" using electricity generated from coal stripped mined and shipped half way across the country, calling themselves green.

For now Cal, AZ, Utah, and a few other states have CNG stations for public use, and it is an easy transition; from compressed natural gas to hydrogen. Brazil has a huge percentage of its vehicles running on natural gas as well as many other small countries. Utah passes along the federal tax credit for cng, currently it’s 63 cents a gge (gasoline gallon equivalent) state wide. I flew with a guy who has a Honda civic, and it cost him just under 4 dollars to fill his tank up. I think his range is just over 210 miles.

The Toyota Prius does less enviromental dammage than the Hummer.
I think you meant more?

I agree that people hung up on sticker MPG miss the big picture, but.....

You're going to have to do better than cite an OPINION piece from a student newspaper.

It's precisely socialist policy like this that made me leave my native Norway in search of the American dream and now we have it gaining popularity in America These leftist policies have propelled thousands of people to leave California to go live in the middle of the Arizona/Nevade desert in search of greater QOL.

Califonia is so restrictive/expensive for business, labor regulations, workers comp, state payroll tax, court system that it has driven thousands of small/medium firms to leave.

I DO own a home, and I AM willing to pay more (even more than $.01/kwhr). In fact, I AM paying more, to subsidize development and utilization of renewable power. Thankfully, not everyone thinks we can just p*ss on the planet at our current rate forever.

MORE damage than a Hummer? Bwahahahahahah! Some people really suck down the corporate PR with a fat straw, don't they? Try doing some real research into the Prius, and you may learn some things. I'm not saying it's the be-all end-all, but it is one HELL of a lot better than dragging around a truck chassis for 150K miles at 15MPG or so!

Thanks for the fix.

Personally I wont waste my time to back up the paper, take it for what it’s worth, also I posted it as an "interesting read" remember. But if I had several hours of worthless time I could I’m sure back up most of what was said. But as far as the Prius doing more environmental damage than a hummer, I think we all know that’s a bit of a stretch. He came up with those figures by comparing the estimated life of the Prius to the Hummer 100k vs. 300k. Sure you can twist numbers to make any point you want. You should be able to see right through that.... If you are so skeptical please post links with solid facts disagreeing with the paper rather than just state it has no creditability because it is an "OPINION piece from a student newspaper".

What’s your "real research" please do post and educate us. I promise I will use two straws to suck down your valuable insight...

100$ a barrel? That's going to sound real good soon.

India is manufacturing cars for the masses. China is manufacturing cars (and RJs) for the masses. 1.3 billion people in China have already traded in bikes for scooters, the next step is automobiles.

Buy energy stocks and invest in commodities. 100$ a barrel is nothing.

The good news...the chinese and indian masses can't afford $100/bbl oil.

If I had to give it away today (instead of sell it), we're talking about $1,200 of depreciation over 3 years. That ain't bad.

You've just gotta do it right. But I digest....
Well, used cars are a gamble. I've got a 1997 saturn two door that gets 32/mpg and has 130k miles on it. The odomoter was broken on it so my buddy sold it to me for $500 and he and his wife were moving to colorado from texas and didn't want to drive it there. He got ripped on that deal I felt bad and told him I'd give him $3k but he told me no. His wife was ****ed when I went up there and said the car ran awesome. I also have a 97' explorer with 155k miles on it which runs ok but I ride a van pool to work(which is sweet cause I drive 10 minutes) so I buy gas once every two weeks. I can't go on like this forever we got these crappy vehicles to pay off my wife's student loans and save money for flying. I'm with you though I'd rather have fuel efficient cars and rent a truck when I need it. I don't buy global warming being man's fault but I'm all for alternative energy. Natural gas vehicles sound like the best option because natural gas is a renewable resource. I mean I can eat enough beans and fill my car up right?
