Pilots with a second job

So, I just started flying with the regionals currently still on IOE but ive been trying to think of something to do with all my spare time besides watching TV in my hotel room. Anyone have second jobs? I know most internet jobs are scams but there are some legit ones out there. Anyone have any suggestions? I feel useless sitting in this hotel room watching tv haha

I heard of an FO that used to go burglarize cars and homes on overnights. That could be lucrative I guess...

There are a lot of pilots in real estate and other things that you can do on the cell phone.

Diver Driver 02-03-2008 11:14 PM

Web design... Easy to do on your laptop from the hotel.

Piston6565 02-03-2008 11:20 PM

Yes there are numerous scams out there today. There are many searches you can perform to find hundreds of jobs like this. I am curious to see who has honestly turned a considerable profit working online. I did a search and found mostly BS but this one was my favorite - $839,000???!!!

Most hotels have a nice selection of adult movies, so you could become an amateur adult film critic.. or professional depending on your level of dedication :D

One FA I know of used to sell her "services" on her layovers. Mind you, this was in a company paid hotel. This worked for her until BOS Vice caught on to the act and nailed her to the wall. She'll be missed......

Danger

There is a danger that if a pilot has a second job that they will find out that it is much easier to make a real living, enjoy success, find satisfaction and to have a real life outside of aviation.

My second job rapidly out paced my flying career and it soon became ridiculous to continue flying. Don't blow it. A second job is a flying career killer.

It would be smart to consider your flying a well paying part time gig. Find something else in another industry, and treat all that money as fun/rainy day money only. I do computer stuff while waiting for the next "boss wants to go" call. I was up-front with the folks at my other job that I might have to drop what I was doing if I got called. This is much easier when you have a little seniority.

www.westathome.com

Basically what you do is take orders from home for as seen on TV products. It is minimum wage but you can earn up to 10 an hour if you take a lot of calls.

You need to have a high speed internet connection, computer, and landline phone that is basic (no caller ID, call waiting, 3 way calling, etc..).

You go through CBT training. I took 3 days to complete spending about 3 hours at a time.

Once you finish the CBT's you log on and take calls. You log onto work on the "west at home application" software and your phone is made available for calls.
When you have a phone call coming to you the screen says "incoming call" and the script for the product they are calling about comes up on your screen.
You read the script verbatim. You take the credit card info address and such. Once the order is complete you press a button that says next call and you wait for the next one to come in.
Since the phone calls are routed to you you don't need long distance and you are not charged for phone usage when taking calls.

Some people watch movies or TV, I study for the ATP between calls.

The minimum amount of time you have to work is 4 hours a month. Max is 40 a week.

If you want more info on what its like feel free to message me.

fly safe!

I'd work the night shift at Kinko's. Now that they're part of FedEx, maybe you'd have your foot in the door. But then, maybe you wouldn't.

ImperialxRat 02-04-2008 06:36 AM

Nice suggestion.

While agree doing programming and web design would be great while sitting reserve, or even on the road... That would require a lot of training.

Any other side gigs out there that don't require much training? Like the westathome.

once i got into the airlines i found that many pilots have unhealthy eating habits (and figures to match...McDee's 2 meals a day, 4 days a week...supersize me please...) so i got into health and nutrition products. Its networking but it works out great during long sits and layovers. People love to talk to pilots and i utilize that. Also, on the products I haven't been this health since high school and I actually have the energy during the layovers to go do things instead of crashing on the bed and flipping channels before falling alseep.
if you dont want to sell it (which once you get into it, pays better than the flying job) then at least use it for the health and energy it gives you.

I day trade. TD*Ameritrade won't let you do it without certain restrictions but Sharebuilder will. Currently building my way up but I'd say I average $100-$150/day. I just pick high fluctuating stocks like XJT. With a lower $$$ amount a nickel means decent movement and usually happens a few times a day. Buy 1.5% low and set a sell at 1.5% high. After over 80 trades I've lost only on one at $6.93.

Of course it has it's gambles. I'm young, unmarried, no kids, so I'm more willing to take the risk. Figured I'd go 110% at it so I'll either come out real well or real bad in the near future. Bought a bunch of google:cool:

Doesn't SEC require $25,000 in a account for daytrading? Don't think many RJ fo's.....or Major fo's like me:( have that.

Day trading does require $25k in equity at all times. TD*ameritrade won't let you do more than 5 day trades before your account is either suspended for a few days or they upgrade it. However sharebuilder I've been placing trades all over the place and never heard a word. Could be because they are buying full lots while you are only buy partials. Perhaps they are "fronting" you to keep it legal.

Steal peanuts and sell them on eBay:p

The real money comes in when you overcharge for shipping!

LOL! It is just too hard trying to find boxes small enough!!

SkyCaptain 02-04-2008 10:19 AM

An Ebay store would be an easy way to make a little cash on the side. One of my friends kid makes 300-500 per week selling kids clothes (she is only 14 years old). Buys clearance rack clothes and then resells them on ebay. Lists once a week, ships once a week. I believe the post office will even pick up your boxes at your house.

Another of my friends shops bulk auctions and resells them on ebay as single items. ex. buys 5-10 laptops on ubid.com and resells them individually on ebay. Not sure how it is working for him, but it is a possibility.

Google adsense if you have an operating web page. I have seen a little income off of this program. You must have a web page, but this is fairly easy, with all of the templates available. I know one person that made almost 10k last year off of this program. Just create a web page that is exciting, interesting to you. Ideas for pilots - international restaurants, how to travel, secrets of the industry, safety of traveling, customs, and etc.

ImperialxRat 02-04-2008 11:14 AM

I thought it was only considered day trading if you did it more than 4 out of 5 days a week (business days).

I don't know...

I'm sorry, my bad. I though it was about what to do on your free time/overnights. I misunderstood it.

No worries man, just being sarcastic. Plus, you hafta see most of the flight attendants at OH to know that it's just unthinkable to spend any extra time with them.

I have a second job. It is a hobby job that gets me discounts on my main hobby. I sell guns!

I enjoy it and it keeps me out of trouble, but between the two jobs I had 2 days off last month and will have about 3 or maybe 4 this month. Still the extra money is nice!

If I only had 2 days off, I would use the extra money to by myself a gun and, well...

Ebay works for me when I need some cash. I had tons of friends give me things when they moved out that I sold over the summer. I think all in all I made around 700 a week. Mind you I cant do anything like that now that I moved and have no free "inventory" Its still a good idea if you have lots of crap hanging around!!

You would be shocked at the things Americans will buy second-hand!

I met a guy who flies for Flight Express. During his 6+ hour wait for his freight in Knoxville, he works as a manager at a fast food store!

Wild!

Drums4life 02-04-2008 06:52 PM

Grab a bunch of phone chargers from the different hotels on overnights and sell them on ebay. I know I've left 2 behind already.

ghilis101 02-04-2008 09:40 PM

become a substitute teacher. most districts pay $100/day.

paxhauler85 02-04-2008 10:07 PM

Not a second job and actually just another way to spend some money, but go "back to school." I just finished another degree (only required 15 additional credits) at my alma mater. Considering working on a masters.

Doesn't earn you money, but it does give you something constuctive to do on the long overnights @ a hotel that's not close to restaurants/stores or in a boring overnight city.

Minneapolis Public Schools pays $115-$130/day. You have to pay $85 bucks to get a Minnesota teaching license and all you need is a college degree. They have stuff available every day.

For you guys that don't mind some actual work, and in a rural area, work for a farmer. Hours can easily flex as they work 16hrs a day anyways in the spring and fall. I still help my dad on his 2300 acre farming operation. Although I'm not airline, you could do it pretty easy even with an airline schedule.

Emb170man, you out of IND??? One of these days I'm probably going to pony up and get a handgun, just haven't done it yet. Always good to have a source.

ebuhoner 02-05-2008 08:22 AM

FAA Examiner

Become an FAA examiner. You can have some fun like "old times" in a c-172... do a couple of checkrides in 1 day and there you go! 800$ in your pocket in 1 day :)... u need to have quite a few hours giving dual tough... not sure how many exactly.

My Examiner for my PPL is an FO from Spirit, and that's what he does during his spare time.. and he really enjoys doing it!

Hope this helps!
