Bad Commuting Stories

Wanker eh?..lol havent heard that one in a while....usually i dont have to 2 leg it....that day the 7am direct cancelled because it never made it in the night before.
Driving would be too much in gas....aside from having a lease...id get screwed. I live 15 mins from ISP...and the parking is free...for a 45 min flight on my company or an 1:05 in a PDT Dash 8...its well worth it.
Luckily LGA opens for us in May...im the # 2 FO there, so i wont have to worry about commuting for a while

Stuck in STL for 2 days during an ice storm. That sucked.
I was checking to see if there was a seat on a United mainline flight from STL and as I approached the gate there was this pricey looking blond yelling at the gate agent about missing her connection and that she had to get on the flight to DEN. She was demanding that she kick people off of the flight and everything. The gate agent repeatedly told her the flight was completely full. I was standing there thinking, "Oh crap. Just what I need, somebody to prime the gate agent up for a jumpseat request." Finally the bizach turned on her heel with her cellphone to her ear and stormed away from the gate. I approached the gate agent and she let me stand in front of her for about 5 full minutes before she acknowledged me (I thought I would let her go first). To my surprise she handed me a window seat in the back of the plane.

Ok, I'll give my stories. Only jumpseated 3 times. Number 1-was right out of IOE and going home for a little while. I was in PHX going to ICT, flight was full I had the jumpseat and was bumped off. Got the last open seat on that flight. Number 2-Going from LNK to ORD to PIT. Was all set up for the jumpseat in LNK and was bumped off. Ended up going to DEN, then PIT. Number 3-Went from MCI-SAN, no problems. Keep in mind the first two were within a week and a half span, so I didn't think commuting was the way to go for me. Now I have a new job and am considering commuting from OMA to either MSP, DTW, OR MEM. Good or bad idea?

Summer of 05 I show up at DIA about 1 pm. looking to JS to STL. When I get to the first flight I planned on flying on there are 5 other TSA guys trying to JS also . 3 of us have recurrent the next day . DEN was setting some record hot temps and all the 50 seat ERJ’s were weight limited and only taking about 30 pax each. All the revenue was getting bumped to the mainline UAL or F9 flights
. It was not looking good. The 3 of us who had recurrent the next day started looking at alternate airport options MCI was looking OK, but flights were later so would probably get stuck there. ORD was out of the question. I was looking at the departure board and I saw a flight that said “Springfield – Boarding”. I ran down to the gate and asked the agent what Springfield it was going to. She said she did not know …and I did not really care. I called one of the other guys who was trying to get info about the MCI flight and told him I was going to Springfield. He said he would get one other guy and try to make to flight. I got listed and told the agent the others would be there shortly. Got let down to check in for the JS and it was a SKW flight. Asked the captain for a ride and gave him a quick rundown about the 3 of us trying to go to STL, but it was not working. He said that we were all welcome and to have a seat
. Right before the door shut to 2 other guys got on and we all had seats in the back of the CRJ. During cruise I got out my SOP and began to do a little pre-recurrent study. About half way through the flight the Capt walked back to use the lav. He stopped and asked us what we were studying. We said the ERJ and told him about recurrent and all that. He seemed happy and the rest of the flight went uneventfully. We landed in SGF pretty late and there were no flights to STL, so we rented a car and drove to STL. Got into town pretty late…but we did not care. I just got to my crashpad and one of my friends walked in. He said he had just flown STL – DEN – STL and had a SKW flight ask them to go up 123.45 They were asked why some TSA guys would have to fly to SGF instead of STL. They were also asked how they would know if we were GO JET or TSA. My friend told the crew of the flight we were on to go ask us what kind of aircraft we flew. So that’s what the captain did…just to make sure we were not Go JET. Apparently some TSA guys who went to Go Jet kept their TSA badges so they could JS until they got their operating certificate
. The captain wanted to make sure we were not them. Long story, but pretty funny for me. It’s a small world.

The two-leg commute out of RAP hasn't treated me too badly. In another month I'll be SLC-based, so that should cut down significantly on the time spent getting back and forth.
I've posted this before, on the thread about gate agents from hell, but the worst commuting experience I've had was FAT-DEN, three days after Christmas. The inbound was late, and was going to be full because the previous flight that day hadn't made it in either. I was the only standby listed though, to my surprise, and thought for certain I would be able to sit in the JS. I never even got the opportunity.
I checked in plenty early in uniform and let the agent know I could sit OMC. Once it looked like nobody else was getting on I approached the counter again and asked her if I could go talk to the captain about sitting up front. She says "Sir, sit down and I'll get to you in a minute,". So...I sit a couple seat away from gate for a few minutes, she's frantically working away on her computer. Two more people run up, throw her their boarding passes, and head down the bridge. Right behind them, the agent closes the door and radios down to ops that the flight's closed and reads the numbers to them. I jumped up and asked again if I could talk to the crew. This time she says "No, I'm sorry, the flight's closed, I can't let you down there." I never lost my cool, even though I was fuming inside. I finally just walked away when she said "Look, this was a quick turn and we didn't want the delay code going on the gate (even though the flight was like an hour and a half late coming in???), besides, they were weight restricted and they wouldn't have let you on anyways." I've never been so angry. Normally I would have just shrugged, since you expect this kind of stuff to happen, but that was one more day since Christmas that I wasn't going to see my kids. This lady is a customer service MANAGER too, for crying out loud.
That one still grinds my gears.

Trying to jumpseat out of some place in Nebraska from the weekend. Was running late and was at the counter doing the patient wait for the agent to recognise you routine. There was already a jumpseater on the flight and the agent was having a hard time finding my company in the computer.
Long story short, told me to call the 800 number to list, as she didn't know how to find our company. I made comment that do this regularly so i know we have an agreement with said airline.
Next, what happened will never leave my memory.... some TSA jerk was hovering behind the seats to my rear and then approached me and told me that i was a security risk and he had to "re-screen" me. Nearly karate chopped him in the head as i was in full uniform (leather jacket however). I complained and then he informed me i fit the bill for a security risk and had to go with him (or else).
Think it was lincoln nebraska. Never want to go back.

I would have been sooooooooooo pi$$ed off. We have a "program" at SLC where those TSA idiots are supposed to try to "sneak" through coded doors that we open behind us. If they make it through we can get fined personally. I swear of any TSA weenie tries that on me they are going to get hurt. You want to "simulate" a security breach? Okay, I'm going to simulate a beating.
