Quote: whats up guys, anybody from TSA or that knows anything about them i got a couple questions:

1. Hows your QOL? Cool people to work with? Schedules tolerable?

2. About how long after you submit resume do they give ya call?

Any info's appreciated, thanks fella's.

QOL depends on - do you live in base, or do you commute. If you commute it might be a little rough at the beginning, but it will get better as you climb up the ladder.

Very nice pilot group to fly with. You will hear people say Trans States captains B!tch alot, but in the last year those group of pilots have moved on to their dream jobs or somewhere else. So no crying from Captain that 9/11 and Hulas messed their life up.

I came in at the perfect time when I did, so my schedule is perfect. If you live in base (STL) the schedule works great. But remember, when you are new it will not be sweet as Apple-Pie.

I could not tell you how long it is taking to get call back for interviews. It depends.

My personal View: Take it for what it's worth!!!!

Trans States Airlines is no SkyWest, ExpressJet or AWAC for that matter. I might not make $12,000 more than the guy at Mesa. We do not have commuter clause that allows me to call in 2 or 3 times a year because I couldn't get myself to work. My works rules and duty rigs sucks so bad I cannot sleep at night. The owner of my airline formed gojet, next year he might startup another one called CHEAP A!SS JET to fly the 170's. I heard rumor that in June 2008, my paycheck is going to bounce. There are many thing I could find that will make it hate my job, but I just show up do my job and go home. I did my research, I compared Apples and Oranges and I made my choice. One man's ex-wife is another man's future wife.

I am not telling you to come to Trans States. I prefer if you do not come, but go to ExpressJet and Skywest and AWAC for that matter. Maybe, if everyone stops coming to Trans States Airlines, the company might work harder to get us every contract with Good Duty rigs, Commuter Clause etc.

I know we are not liked by other regionals because we are draging down the industry. My personal view is RJ's are dragging down the industry. Research! Research!! Research!!! Do what is right for you.

Quote: 1. Yes it does. HK created an alter-ego once and he'll do it again. HK is no different than JO at MESA... they both worship Frank Lorenzo. Don't know who that is? Go ask any old guy at a major how much Frank Lorenzo helped this profession. If he doesn't punch you in the face for saying that name you'll soon understand. HK and JO are the Frank Lorenzo of today! So yes... TSA is bringing down the industry. Quick upgrades won't last forever. Remember quick upgrades and being understaffed indicate one of two things... huge growth or people aren't willing to work there. Acquiring 2 emb145's from MESA is not huge growth!

2. Yes it is. Right now schedules aren't bad because they are understaffed therefore schedules have to be efficient for the flying to be covered. What if things were properly staffed... I promise that you would spend a lot of time sitting around hotels. Also they can now sit you on reserve out of base... enjoy sitting reserve in a hotel on a less than normal call out time when you could just be sitting from base. Being a commuter this may actually be better for you.

3. FYI... There are 3 direct flights a day to STL from PIT. This is a post USAirways PIT reduction number. There were 4 before the cutback.

4. True, us at the "better" regionals aren't expanding at the moment, but I will make approximately $12,000 more this year as an FO at AWAC then my buddies at TSA will. This number is based off not only hourly rate but also the vastly superior work rules... If things continue as they are I should upgrade at 2.5 years.

A snapshot of the moment (i.e. upgrades, reserve time) is not what you base your choice on. What if hiring stops again (and it will) at the majors... where would you rather be stuck?
groovinaviator, I truely see your point and I respect your post 100%. But with all due respect I have to disagress with some of your points.

Yes, The management at Trans States Airlines started gojet. And I bet they will start another one very soon. Trans States lost alot of money when they started that airline due to people leaving Trans States and the F_word happened sometime later in the company. Believe me, H.K is an accountant and he does not like to loose money, so I do not see this happening any time in the future.

Quick Upgarde!!! I hate quick upgrade. I think upgrade should be 4 years at regionals. Why did this ever happen in aviation. I wish everyone was hired with 1500 hours 500 ME like most of the people in aviation. I hate quick upgrade, but guess what! There is nothing we could do about it. Yes, it will stop, come to a halt, freeze, pause whatever we want to call it. Nevertheless, it sucks for those that missed the hiring and upgrade boom.

Understaffed!!! I need proof we are understaffed. I looked at the schedule and bid packet but could not come up with understaff. Please correct me if I am wrong. NO GROWTH!! I have to agree we are not growing like the next guy, but attrition to us feels like growth. i.e In Richmond, if they loose 5 - 6 Captains that is 10% of their Captains, so that is 10% movement for the F/Os. I know it is not much but at Trans States that is major growth. Most of our Captains are leaving for Netjet euorpe, Cathy, Emirates so we will always have attrition to help out. Nobody wants to be at Trans States for a 10 years.

I do not know where you get your information about reserve. You might sit reserve for a long time at home or airport reserve, but sitting Hotel reserve at Trans States who will pay for the hotel you or the company. You might sit hotel reserve in IAD or ORD, maybe a STL guy sitting reserve in RIC, but Not going to happen that much. Yea, it sucks but you are making money atleast.

Move to base so you do not have to commute. Or just find a way to get to work. That is the life you choose. I know alot of commuters and they find their way to work. Life is a B!tch.

Your buddy must be very lazy j/k. I do not know what to say regarding your $12,000 claim but If you compare your paycheck with someone hired the same day as you, I bet they are making more then you are right now. I know I made $25,000 more than you last year because Trans States paycheck is not my primary source of income.

This is one place I agree with you 100%, no one should base their future on quick upgrade or reserve time. I can upgrade today but choose not too. If I get stuck I have only things to fall back on.

Trans States Airlines is dragging down the industry. Not oil prices, not major airlines looking for the lowest bidder. My personal view is that RJ's is dragging down the industry. Did you know many foreign airlines operate the ERJ-145, E-170 and E-175 as part of their fleet? I family member flying for Kenya Airways and Virgin Nigeria operating E-170. I could get a job for a national Airline making more money, flying regional jet and I hunt on my days off. RJ's are dragging the industry down. 50 seaters are going to disappear but I will be long gone by the time it happens.

Please we need to stop this bashing and trash talking. We are all in the same toilet and if things continue, we will all be out of work and sitting on the street. I have a secure future outside of the airlines. IS YOUR FUTURE SECURE? and this is question for every Regional Pilot.

allright point by point here we go...

1. no additional thoughts on this

2. I agree with you 100%

3. Info comes directly from a TSA reserve captain

4. Info comes directly from a TSA reserve captain

5. I don't love commuting but also don't complain about it.I chose to commute and even moved out of base back to the midwest. I was simply providing info to the thread starter relating to his question about commuting from PIT-STL.

6. I agree. When I was hired at AWAC, TSA was furloughing. Yes I would be a captain several months back if I were at TSA. That's life. Glad you have another job and an extra $25,000. Many of us have other income as well, but that isn't related.

7. TSA is not dragging down the industry... if anything it is an example of the free market at it's finest. However TSA is in a race to the bottom and it is not helping our professional (overall future pilot QOL) at all.

8. My future is not secure (www.doihaveafuturehere.org), but I am hoping for the best. Even if we all end up on the street I'm sure most of us could cope. Big picture... most of us are un-likely to end up homeless.

Call a truce?

Trans States Airlines was never at the top. Hulas has no plans of been at the top, never has never will. That been said we are not racing to the bottom because we have always been at the bottom

pokerpilot it still seem like they are hiring over there at TSA? how long have you been there?

TSA's hiring has slowed, but is still going on. You can expect that you'll need somewhat hire time to get in now than you would have last summer. (Commercial/Multi) isn't going to guarantee you a class date right now, competitive is probably in the 600/50 range.

Upgrades are slowing, but that was partially as a result of the new year, (as everyone knows, senior people don't like upgrading through the holidays) so upgrade went pretty instantly from 13 months, to 24+ months, and back to 18 months within a 3 month span. The majors slowing hiring will undoubtly slow upgrades at trans states, but don't be fooled into thinking that other regionals won't be affected as well, companies seeing large amounts of growth in the 70+ seat market will do better than most others, and i'd expect better results at the 170/75 carriers as opposed to 700/900 carriers.

The growth is very minimal at best (really, i wouldn't come here based on "growth" of a couple aircraft.) For the pilots already here, yeh, it's a welcomed addition, will give a couple extra lines, and a couple extra airframes as we get into summer, which hopefully will keep the rest of the fleet a little less stressed , but that'd be wishful thinking.

Exactly. Supply and demand. Don't feed the bottom feeder.

Why is XJT in the red? Because there are guys that want to work at TSA and fly the same aircraft for less money and worse work rules, thats why.

Thanks to the guys that made sense on this thread, and to the guys that defended TSA, I don't know what you're thinking.
