This happened at ASA in the late 90's and early 2000's. They had hired some very low time FO's. When it came time for them to upgrade ASA had to hire captain's off the street as some of the FO's could not legally get an ATP. Once they got to 1,500 hrs. (ASA eventually dropped their in-house 3,000 hr. Capt requirement out of staffing desperation) some had to go rent a 172 to get the PIC needed to qualify for the ATP. Seems like there was a more stringent ICAO requirement as well.

It's not crazy to expect someone who is about to be given the sole responsibility of an airliner and people's lives to have a little experience being the PIC of an airplane. Being in an aircraft alone and being solely responsible for making the decisions that effect the outcome of the flight will do them some good. I think it should be higher than 250.

Yeah, I agree with you. I just meant it was crazy that the 250 requirement is actually an issue for some people. In reality it should probably be 500 hours PIC
