kinda sounds like aviation.....LOL
of course its all perspective..... sky and some other are always throwing out the way it "use" to be......... and how good pilots then had it....... I know more than a few guys who flew for major carriers for 30 years during those days.... some sat sideways on the panel for nearly 60 percent of their career before going to the right seat and then ...ah the golden ring... the left seat in their last few years with the likes of TWA...PanAmerican....etc...... everybodies path in this business is different. To say that it was better unequivocally back "then" is all based on what you were looking at from your seat.....

I guess Wilbur and Orville were in hog heaven, and things went downhill from there.

I guess its really your decision. I just read through this thread and realized that most people are polarized either ultra happy or ultra miserable.
One thing that i noticed is that the unhappy people tend to state alot of facts about their experience with the industry. ie lack of decent quality of life, poor pay, lack of the ability to make lateral moves if need be.
The happy people tend to state less facts. They talk about attitude, and the "its better than a 9-5!" argument. One guy even through out a quote from Rudy about following your dreams.
I eventually found that no matter how hard i tried, positive thinking and insperational quotes couldn't make up for a terrible QOL, chronic lack of sleep and time to eat, a seemingly never ending schedule of continuous duty overnights... etc the list is too long for a quick reply.
In an airline career, you end up with very little control of your life, you are in the passenger seat hoping things go ok.
Positive thinking and a die hard work ethic won't protect you from the pitfalls of retiring destitute and broke, and flying 135 freight for your golden years until you die in the seat at age 75, or being a 45 year old divorcee, eating spegettios living in a dark crappy crashpad in the getto with 12 other guys.

To go into a career and not shoot for a certain level of success is pointless. Are you saying that no one should start a flying career these days? That would be the real BS....especially from such an optimistic "realist"

Timing is everything. Any Profession can be the golden ticket if you get in at the right time, Imagine starting real-estate 10 years ago, you would be EXTREMELY well off, if you started lat year, your screwed.
