As your 'position' states: "Cadillac on 20's with wings"? Now that would be one UGLY aircraft!

How about a Dash on 50's?? That could be cool...

I suppose a Dash on 50s would be OK as long as they were spinnaz yO!

I've been helping the cause by keeping my sick calls up there. Power to the people!

Us reservists appreciate your efforts! More people should take example after Naley here...especially if your LGA based. :p

Stoki, enjoy your welfare check. Rsv sucks because you can't go too far and never break guarantee.
But if you're not gonna break guarantee, why work?

There are plenty of places to go in the city, and outside of it that you can get back within 2 hrs. Just put a set of clothes together in a day bag and leave it in the crew room or put them in your flight case. Just carry your ID with you just in case you have to go in, then call for last on days you go out.

Since I got online in 6 mos, i've had 2 same day calls, and only worked maybe max 2 in every 10 Rsv days. There are museums, national park sites, cool places to see (empire state, rockerfeller center nbc studios, etc...)
By 2 or so, add liberty, ellis and governor's islands to the list, as by 2 same day calls are virtually impossible. Just be ready to get on the ferry around 2 ish and you're home free.
Think of Rsv as paid time to see NYC.

You could get ballsy and leave around noon and hit up DC or Boston. Those are a little more risky, for same day calls, but, no risk, no reward. There's so much you can do. Do it until your schedule changes so you can't without using vacation.

So your saying since you have been LGA based you have worked maybe 2 in 10 reserve days for the most part? I don't mind the down time so much as I did when I was MDT based, out there it was nothing but corn.

My thing is I live about 1:45 minutes from the airport. But then again you have to get to the parking lot, take the shuttle bus to the terminal, get through security, then finally check in, and that can take another half hour if not more. I thought many times just sitting reserve at home, they usually give you more then 2 hours notice anyways, but at the same time I am kind of scared, especially since I am on probation and now isnt the worst time to lose a flying job, so I am renting a room where I stayed during college here in NYC. I like it, it is just a little pricey.

Only reason I would like to fly more is because I have an agenda that I would like to start working on, and it is expensive, and includes more flight time. So that is the only reason for my impatience.

What is the latest PDT usually calls you in if you start reserve at 5AM? I imagine by like 4-5 o'clock there isnt much they can do with you since its a 2 hour call-out and now your running out of duty-time. ?

cozdabuch 08-20-2008 02:57 PM

The latest you will get a call is about 2-3pm for a same say call. (if you start at 5am).
Basically, 2 hrs to get there, 1hr prior to flight, and the shortest leg is to PHL at 45min scheduled going there (if they just deadhead you for a next day flight,) and 30 min back.
So add it up, 2+1+1.25=4.25hrs
Subtract that from the end of your on call and you know when you're home free for a same day short callout.
With the # of reserves we have, add another hour or two because they have so many staggered on calls, they'd rather use a later one than push you to the end of a duty day. Trust me, I know this for a fact.

Like I said about going out in the city, pack a daybag, put it in the crew room or stuff it in your flight case, so the minute you get that call, hop on the subway and make your way to the airport.
Remember, on the subwaw to bus, you get dropped off in front of the terminal, no waiting for that cr@**y employee shuttle. I know you can do it, as I've made it out to the airport (area = buddy's crashpad) a few times in just over an hour from anywhere you can choose in manhattan.
Heck, hit up the beaches on long island and grab the LIRR back.

There's a lot you can do.

As to your agenda, you and me both man.
But the bottom line is that we can't do a lot about it, and when you hold a line, all you want is time off. Enjoy what you can get now.
As for open flying, there's not gonna be a lot over the fall and winter. We are pretty fat on reserves.
I've held a BU since I got here with the exception of one month. That one month of reserve (June), I only flew 8 days. I know another guy junior to me who only flew 2 days that month.
Even on BU lines, I only get scheduled for 6-9 days of work and get used maybe 1 max 2 rsv days for that month. It is what it is...

stoki 08-20-2008 04:26 PM

Thanks for adding all that up, thats a good way of doing it that I havent thought of.

Yea you are right though, it is what it is. Time off is a good thing, but to be honest in my situation I can't really afford it. It would be one thing if it was temporary, but I got a feeling I will be on reserve for a looonnnnggg time. I think there are like 10 guys ahead of me for the closest BU, so thats not even a line. But I guess I have no choice but to enjoy it the best I can, like you said. Can't do anything about it anyways. :D

P.S whats a LIRR?
