Yes I can still non-rev and I'm not living hand to mouth..but.... since I'm not currently earning a paycheck I'm living out of my emergency fund... not exactly intended to be vacationing on or be depleted by vacations while my rent and utilities still need to be paid here. If I get a new job and I'm not starting for a week or two..I'll consider that a more guarenteed paycheck and would consider a vacation but right now the option of spending money I don't need to with no paycheck in sight seems like a bad idea for me. Might be different for someone else.

California highway patrol...you can fly Cessna's there after a year of being a road cop, but not a bad gig pays about 3500 while at the academy, and about 65k after that... if you do get a pilot slot its about 85k

Can you still non-rev? Don't know your financial situation, but this may be a rare opportunity to travel around Europe for a month or so. Get a second-class Eurailpass and stay in hostels/B&Bs and it's surprisingly cheap, especially after the summer tourist season. Once you start working again, your next chance to do something like this may be when you retire. Good luck!

I bet if we still had the travel benefits more guys would comeback when management recalls, imagine how much money they'd save on training, all for a few empty seats. It's really retarded

I myself just got out of flying altoghter. I went back to driving tractor trailers again. I was in my tenth month with AWAC and had an issue during recurrent ground school. I was given the opportunity to retake a systems test then take a PC two days after that. I took a long look at the industry and had to make a tough choice. I walked away from flying and now I am home every night and off weekends and holidays. I make $3600.00 a month driving a tractor trailer. The trucking industry and the company I work for are doing a better job with the rising cost of fuel. They pass the price increase onto the customer.

I'll be taking a part-time job that will pay more than flying ever did, still related to the industry. I plan to CFI on the side as well, if I can manage to track down any students. I've been saving like a madman since I was 13, and now I know why.
With the new income, extensive savings and free time I'll have now, I'm looking into higher education. I've taken the LSAT and done better than I would have thought, and I'm studying for the MCAT. Y'know, keep my options open - haven't decided which will be my backup career. Hopefully a guy with an ATP and that kind of educational backing will find a niche somewhere...
It's funny, you get into the airlines because of the freedom of the whole thing, and I haven't experienced it until now. Depending on how the next couple of months go, I may not be coming back.

I understand Compass needs something like 100 pilots ASAP. Having a hard time filling classes due to some pretty low pay, but really . . .you get that anywhere when you go to the bottom of the list.
They used to have a pretty good flow agreement with NWA, but I'm not certain how that will be affected by the impending merger. Who knows? Could be a backdoor to Delta.
Just a thought. You could keep your currency up while you shop around looking for a better gig (although I think there's a training contract there).

I mostly feel really sorry for the CFIs trying to break out into something better; 800/100 doesn't get you anywhere right now when everyone on the street has several hundred hours of jet time at the very minimum.
