Quote: Varies by airline. At Comair we are supposed to wear the hat at all times except when we are seated or in the aircraft, and it's optional on the ramp. For many but not most, the hat comes off upon leaving CVG or JFK.
Copy - I wonder why the hat indoors though. Even my momma told me to take off my ball cap when indoors Out on the ramp - seems like a FOD hazard. Well....being a career military guy I'm pretty use to being told how to dress so if I get a job and the company policy is to wear the hat - then I guess I'll waer the hat - though it will take some time to readjust
Thanks for the input.

Quote: I'm too embarrassed to wear my uniform these days. When I see a pilot in the terminal I think LOSER. With a few exceptions pilots have little to no control of there careers (salaries) and have taken it bent over the last decade or so. How can you respect someone like that?

OK OK calm down. Sure pilots are still looked up to by the public but I know better. For example United pilots have lost millions in retirement, pay and benefits. They can do nothing about it and continue to work day to day.

My colleagues at Alaska had a 25-35% pay cut forced down their throats. Can we do anything about it? No. How can anyone be proud of that?

The days of wearing a uniform with PRIDE are over. Todays pilot should dress business casual. That's it.
You mean I am supposed to look up to someone based purely on what their pay is? Does that mean I have to look up to Barry Bonds or Pete Rose, but look down guys like fireman and teachers and police officers? Are those guys LOSERS too?

Get over it, man. It is called capitalism. You earn what the market will pay. You get pride from what you do, not what someone pays you. It is not fair - it never has been. But it isn't evil either. Its called LIFE.

If you tie your self-worth to your paycheck, then you are in for a dissapointing ride. My two cents.

Well, if we couldn't wear it indoors then that would mean the only place we could wear it while working would be the ramp then it would be, as you said, an FOD risk. So then we would be toting around a useless $60 bag ornament. Wouldn't make much sense. However some airlines are hat optional and some don't have hats at all.

Your right of course but I can't help feeling this way. I guess a little more time has to pass before I can feel proud again. I'm sure there are grave diggers that are proud of the job they do. (not picking on grave diggers)

BTW it is not capitalism (a free market anyway) if I can't easily strike. ALPA and pilots in general are not playing on a level playing field.

Maybe someday, but I will make sure it goes at least one more.

Saw a pilot in CVG (NOT Comair) who was pulling his roller and flt bag, with a backpack with a skateboard strapped to the back pack!!! LMAO

Also watched a Chief Pilot remove a CHQ pilot from the CVG terminal one day because he looked like a slob and was dropping food from his sub sandwich all over the ground. Most humorous!!

Look like you care about how you look. Hat...who cares, but I wear mine. A least press your shirt and tuck it in properly.

Just my .02

PS I have never seen anyone allowed in a jumpseat dressed in sweat pants or shorts. Have a little consideration.

We had a chief pilot here in CVG chew out a Delta pilot for not wearing his hat.

I agree with first impression is huge with all of us, but the guy with a skateboard attached could be non revving... i carry golf clubs to check in when i go to days off for golf tournaments cause i used to play in college... ill even take em on a quick two day if there is time to play. i have had my snowboard boots attached cause my snowboard bag wont fit em and i have had to do this in uniform coming off a trips or going back to work so i can make it through security with liquids to not get hassled. I get comments from people/pax saying good for you, for using the perks of travelling to go do stuff.

If its an everyday thing, thats one story but who knows... we all have lives outside of the job ( i hope) and its ok for a business guy/gal to carry golfclubs, bike helmets, etc to/from work. our flight case stickers show personality and unless it offensive no one says anything, so who cares who is carrying around what... why try and worry about another guy and what they do... you could be jealous.

Why do you care? does it make you look worse for some reason?

Ok, of course it is important to not look ridiculous. On the other hand this industry is going down the tubes fast. These guys who are so proud and want to dress to the nines can pride their way to the wal mart greeter job when they retire because that is exactly where many pilots will end up. You can't build a retirement through a career at the regionals and that is where most people will be stuck for the future. Pilots need to have some perspective on things. When you go to buy a house they don't care that you are a regional captain and that you wear your uniform well. They care about how much money you have. Many pilots don't have very much money. That is nothing to be proud of!

That's no excuse whatsoever for looking slovenly and unprofessional. Not saying to iron your uniform after each landing, but is it too hard to ensure that shoes are well shined and the shirt is properly tucked and buttoned with a proper tie that is on straight? I think not. It's basic grooming.
