Places you have traveled too.

as far as when your furloughed from what I have read you lose travel privelages. But I guess it might depend on the airline. ?

In the past 18 months I have gone to:
Germany (Cologne and the Ahr Valley)
Ecuador (Guayaquil)
Argentina (Buenos Aires)
Malawi, Africa (Lilongwe, Salima, and Lake Malawi)
Future trips for 2009 will possibly be:
Peru, Uruguay, Shanghai PRC, Hong Kong, London, and perhaps Vietnam.
I'd say the best bet for a neophyte traveler of the places I've been would be Buenos Aires, Argentina. Lots to do, excellent food, even better wines, all in a beautiful setting. In addition, the city is very pedestrian freindly (i.e. you will not need a car), and the "SubTe" (BA's subway) will take you within a few blocks of just about anywhere in town for USD$0.30, and taxis are ubiquitous and cheap. Best of all: Its an inexpensive place to stay and dine. One of the few truly affordable places left. A glorious repast can be had for less than USD$20. Amazing place. Germany (as mentioned above) is incredible as well, just quite a bit more expensive.

That does sound like a pretty good deal. What is a "repast"?
How much would a decent but nothing fancy hotel be for a night or two? Sounds like a pretty good idea, especially from the money perspective.

If you want to go to Alaska cheaply it is not that hard. There is a 'backpacker's shuttle' that will take you from Anchorage up to Denali NP pretty cheaply, once there no car is needed if you are into camping.
My Favorite has been Costa Rica. Busses can get you anywhere from San Jose, and food & hotels are still near third-world,no, 'developing nation' prices. Just don't expect hot water for $10/nt.

wow - bora bora, malawi, alaska, iceland - all places that have been on my mind recently for places to visit. can you guys elaborate a little bit on general prices, easiness of travel, etc.?
i've been to french polynesia before (moorea), and would looooove to go back and do bora bora. but that was before i worked for the airline. i assume you'd have to buy a zed fare on air france or air tahiti nui? how about for hotels? as far as i can remember, it was very pricey and im thinking it'd be even more so for bora bora.

I'm single and live in base, so I can actually use my flight benefits for my own pleasure rather than commuting back and forth to home! I've actually done a trip to Asia with only 5 days off, and Dublin/AMS with 4 days off. My captains think I'm weird when I tell them what I did on my days off..
This year:
Tokyo
Bangkok
Manila
Dublin
Paris
Barcelona
Amsterdam
Mexico City
Buenos Aries
All that on a FO budget as well! (Helps not having kids or a wife and living in cheap ass Detroit) It's actually pretty easy to make friends overseas and dramatically lower your costs by crashing at their place, etc.. Hostels are also an option. I usually jumpseat to avoid paying nonrev fees.
Plans for next year:
China
Bali/Jakarta
Bangkok/Phuket
Rio de Janero
London
Prague
Maybe somewhere in Africa when the DL benefits kick in
Sydney (to checkout the A380)
