Bartending will not work. Did it for 9 years prior to being a pilot. You'll triple your current income as a FO pilot but if you can't work your scheduled day one time your fired. Had a great time going it though; why did I get $50,000.00 in debt for a B.S. and training to get paid 1/3 of what I use to make? Oh yeah, to be a pilot

if you commute while on reserve find something that takes the edge off...i play computer games on my laptop and read about 2-3 books a week...
just never listen to those voices in your head...

0813,
just to let you know, the FAA restricts pilots from FLYING more than 100 hours in a month, but does not restrict pilots from being PAID more than 100 hours in a month. Its all about soft time...Last year I flew about 500 hours, but was paid for over 800 hours.

It is all about timing like someone said above! I am in my second regional airline job and have sat a total of 1 month of reserve. The first go around I actually got TDY for the first 3 months so, home was paid for 24hr/7days/28bid period so it was great to get about $800 of free money for per diem. After that I changed bases and had a line.
At my current airline I started at just the "right" time for getting a line in my first base. Three people junior to me sat reserve for about 6 months off and on before being senior enough to hold a line. In my new base which I have been with the second airline for 1yr 3mo I sit at home and am loving life. I fly about 80-85hrs/mo and have 17-20 days off.
I got lucky in the timing aspect as there are people for my airline who have spent years on reserve...it is all about what you can make of it, if it is your dream don't let anyone especially on this board stop you.

Nights in Paris, days in Rome, the women, the money, the respect...........
I kid I kid
More like nights in Dayton, Holidays in a crashpad and enough money to keep you alive on ramen noodle..........
However you can clear $50,000.00 your 2nd year at a GOOD regional

Unless you are working for a major airline.
If you are lucky you will Gross $30k.
Don't build up this job for more than it is. We have all been cheated and lied to and you don't need to add fuel to the fire.

Look at all the regionals. Most have people on furlough and picking up open time is tough. Not too mention your fellow pilots won't like it. So to turn $28/hr into $50k isn't going to happen. $28/hr is hard to turn into $28,000.
If you are in your early 20's then maybe do this job. Otherwise go to school, get a degree and spend time with your friends and familly. Living life in a cheap hotel on the outskirts of some crappy small town is no way to spend your life. The only reason people are doing this job is because they are in too deep. If you have spend less than $20k on your ratings then get out. Don't do it. Run. Become a dentist.

You need to find another profession if you think people do this job because they are in too deep. I mean, sure, maybe some people do it because of that (cough cough YOU), but most of us do it because it's what we love and it's our dream. How about you go become a dentist.
Crap hotels, Crap Pay, Getto F/A's, **** Poor Management, not job security, work weekends, holidays, kids birthdays, for what? Travel Benefits that aren't worth crap.
There are good days but there are a lot of bad days. The bad days are the ones when you read about people making $50k as a second year F/O. Because it's all LIES.........
