I am curious as to why turbo prop manufacturers are not moving to electrically heated leading edges as opposed to the boots. If I am not mistaken, this is how the 787 is going to heat its wing leading edge.

Okay so just out of curiosity.... how possible would it be to rig up some hot wing A/I system to an APU. It may not be very fuel efficient, but it might be safer. Just use the APU for bleed air extraction in the air to supply the wing leading edges.

I'd assume you'd need one heck of an APU. For the EMB, it's a single stage axial flow diesel engine, and doesn't create enough bleed temperature to function the anti-ice systems. Now, if you had a JT8 or something back there, you'd be ready to rock.

Well the APU in the CRJ 700/900 isn't supposed to run the A/I systems, but I've heard it could, hypothetically. Maybe the ducting isn't correct for that, or something. I haven't looked into it, and I've never tried it. For the size of the Q400, perhaps that APU wouldn't be that big of a deal in the Q, and considering it is Bombardier - it might actually be doable. It's just an interesting thought.
