It's no different than the Screen Actors Guild. They are a very powerful union. Their contract dictates that when the studio needs to fill a role, no matter how big, they must FIRST offer the opportunity to a union member before auditioning non-union actors. If a union member accepts, they are paid according to the contract.

I know this because one of my students was a retired actor. From all the things he told me, I would say the are one of the most powerful unions in the country.

There is no reason we couldn't achieve the same thing at ALPA.

This way, the real new guys still "pay their dues," but no one has to pay them 2, 3, or even 4 times just because of a furlough. You still lose your seniority and everything else, but you'd skip the crappy year 1 pay.

I think that this is a fair intermediate between what we have now, and a master seniority list.
The better solution is for us to stop voting in these POS contracts in the first place!

Actors aren't regulated by the Railway Labor Act...

We need to do away with that outdated legislation.

I am sure that mgmt could care less if the 1/2nd year FO were paid more...as long as the rates were lowered somewhere else. Seems to me the problem (as defined by the original poster) of the low first year pay is relatively easy to fix, as long as the guys at the table next time are willing to give up a little of the senior guys pay to go towards the new guys pay. Yeah, REAL likely.
